Homebrew Zombie (Hungry) Species Details

You died. And then something brought you back to life. Whether it was a lich, a miracle, or any other circumstance, somehow you're still walking around on this plane of reality. Or, walking... Shambling, really. You've somehow regained your former mind. Maybe you were only recently deceased. Maybe you got lucky, and the magic responsible for your resurrection left that part intact. Maybe you scraped it together during years of toil for an evil overlord, through sheer strength of will. Whatever it is, you're back, and ready to choose your own path!

At least, if you can sate that gnawing hunger...

Zombie (Hungry) Traits

As a zombie, your body is too deteriorated to retain much of your former self, but you share some characteristics with your fellow undead.

Ability Score Increase

Your higher tolerance for pain has some benefits. Your Constitution score and Strength score both increase by 1.

Age

You already died once. Now, your body is only sustained your will to keep going... and the brains you feed it. Without proper sustenance, a zombie's flesh will fall from their bones within a few months.

Size

You roughly retain the shape and size of your former self. (If you want to make a Small or Large zombie, be my guest)

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Undead Nature

Undead no longer need to eat normal food, drink, breath, or sleep. Instead of sleeping during a long rest, they must enter in to a state of semi consciousness, for 4 hours a day. You do not dream in this state. While remaining in this state are aware to your surroundings, but you have disadvantage on perception checks. After resting in this way you gain the benefit that a living creature does from 8 hours of sleep.

Darkvision

You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Deathly Visage

You are dead, and no matter how much you may try to hide it, others can always tell there's just something... off, about you. Especially once they get a glance of your rotting body. You get disadvantage on Persuasion checks, and gain proficiency in the Intimidation skill.

Undead Fortitude

When you are reduced to 0 hit points but not killed outright, you can drop to 1 hit point instead. You can’t use this feature again until you finish a long rest.

Zombie Vulnerabilities

Due to your unholy persistence to exist after death, you have a resistance to poison damage, but are vulnerable to radiant damage.

Gnawing Hunger

You're not like normal zombies, which crawl around mindlessly, fighting whatever comes in their path. You have a will, a mind of your own. But this comes with a price: A brain for a brain...

Every 48 hours, you must consume the brains of a humanoid creature. Whenever you fail to do so, you gain one level of exhaustion, as per the normal exhaustion table, except level 6 leaves you a brainless, ordinary zombie, a death of the self. Eating one full brain heals one level of exhaustion immediately.

As an Undead creature, most healing spells don't have an effect on you. Luckily, you can supplement your healing by eating some cerebral matter. You can harvest the brains of a freshly slain humanoid and keep them with you for a week. When you eat a quarter of it, as an action, it heals 1d4 hit points plus your Constitution modifier.

Languages

You speak Common and one other language of your choice, usually either one you knew before death, or one your creator would've spoken.
