Homebrew Awakened Gnoll Species Details

Gnolls are feral, hyena-headed humanoids that attack without warning, slaughtering their victims and devouring their flesh.

Awakened Gnolls, whether by the Awaken spell or some other divine or arcane means, forgo their savage nature to become more self-aware and intelligent. They may still cling to their primal nature or look to distance themselves from it entirely to pursue a new life away from their animalistic brethren. 

Awakened Gnoll Traits

Gnolls can vary in their structure, but all are feared for their strong bite and hardiness in unfriendly environments.

Ability Score Increase

Your Strength score increases by 2, and your Constitution score increases by 1.

Age

Gnolls live short lives due to their brutal nature. They mature around 5 and rarely lives after 30. Depending on when you became Awakened, you could potentially live to 50 depending on your lifestyle.

Alignment

Gnolls are chaotic by nature. Before Awakening, Gnolls will veer towards Evil. An Awakened Gnoll may still be Chaotic but can encompass the entire spectrum.

Size

Gnolls average between 7-8 feet tall and weighing around 280-330 pounds. There can be outliers shorter or marginally taller with the respective weight differences.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet. 

Darkvision

You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Beast of Fang and Claw

Being a beast of the hunt, prior to your Awakening your fangs and claws were your primary weapons. You can still use them to make unarmed attacks. Your bite deals 1d6 piercing + your Strength modifier. Your claws deal 1d4 slashing + your Strength modifier. This replaces the standard unarmed attacks dealing bludgeoning damage.

Rampage

When you reduce a creature to 0 hit points with a melee attack on its turn, you can take a bonus action to move up to half its speed and make a bite attack.

Feral Existence

Given that a gnoll must live off the land, you can proficient in Survival. You can also use the common perception of your race to your advantage, you also gain proficiency in Intimidation.

Languages

You can speak Gnoll naturally, but upon Awakening you learn to speak, read, and write Common.
