Homebrew Animated Construct Species Details

You are a golem made of iron or steel, given sentience and free thought by a magic-infused crystal core in your chest. Usually created by wizards for help brewing and household tasks, artificers for security and company, or tinkers as an experiment, they don’t obey the usual rules of mortality. Their body functions as long as their core is both intact and magically charged, and if the core does get broken or run out of power, it can be replaced by a new core. These items are, however, rare.

Because they are not living creatures, animated constructs do not need to eat, drink or breathe, but they do still need to “sleep” by shutting down for a long rest. As they have no kind of immune system, they cannot be affected by poisons, but acid rips right through their metal exteriors. Healing magic and potions also have no effect on them, instead stitching up wounds with the mending cantrip.

Animated Construct Traits

As an animated construct, you have the following traits:

Ability Score Increase

Your metal coating makes you more resistant to wear. Your Dexterity score increases by 2 and your Constitution score increases by 1.

Mechanical Body

You cannot be affected by any form of healing spell or potion, but traits like the paladin’s “lay on hands” still work on you. Instead, you regain 2d4+2 hit points if you are targeted by the mending cantrip.

Mechanical Nature

Your metal body comes with its benefits and flaws. You are immune to the poison damage and the poisoned effect, due to having no organs. You are vulnerable to acid damage, as it eats through your metal flesh. You do not need to eat, drink, or breathe, but can if you so please.

Mechanical Upgrade

You may choose one of the following abilities to enhance your abilities:

Languages

You can speak, read and write Common and one other language. This other language should ideally be one your master would be able to teach you, or that you would learn to interact with the people around you.
