Homebrew Curst Species Details

A curst is a creature that was killed following a ritual involving the casting of both bestow curse and wish. Removing this curse requires the original caster using remove curse, or an effect that destroys undead- both ultimately end the curst's life. They are dark, harrowed creatures, unaging and often infested with vermin. They are typically associated with wights and revenants, with whom they are often mistaken.

Curst Traits

Your curst character has the following traits.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30.

Ability Score Increase

Your Constitution score increases by 1, and another ability score of your choice increases by 1.

Age

You do not age, and are kept at a state of decay you were at when made into a Curst- this can range from no decay at all, to advanced decay with graying skin and rotting flesh.

Alignment

Curst most often mimic whatever alignment they were in life, though countless of their kind fall to evil in the pursual of escaping their undead fate.

Size

Curst can be any height that they were in life, most often ranging from 5 to 7 feet tall. Their builds, similarly, vary greatly, with some being slender and lithe and others being hulking humanoid shapes.

Undead

Your creature type is Undead, rather than Humanoid.

Unkillable

You cannot die. Instead, when you would normally die (via failing 3 death saving throws), your body becomes broken. Over the course of the next 2d12 hours, your body heals and you return to 1 hit point. There are two exceptions to this rule, listed below:

  • If your body is totally destroyed (such as being placed in a sphere of annihilation or being totally submerged in acid), you cannot regenerate. As long as a small fragment of your body remains undestroyed, however (such as a hand or even a finger), you can regenerate.
  • If a creature casts remove curse on you while you are at 0 hit points, you instantly die.

You cannot benefit from magical healing in any capacity.

Threshold of Life

You have resistance to both cold and fire damage. Your being is constantly suffused with a minor chilling aura, and you cannot feel warmth in any capacity.

Madness of the Brink

Your kind are prone to madness. When you "die" but return to life, roll a d6- you gain a type of madness based on the result.

Madness Type

1-2

Short-term madness

3-5

Long-term madness

6

Indefinite madness

At the DM's discretion, an indefinite madness may be cured through a specific action or quest appropriate to the character. Similarly, the DM may decide that your character has vague, disturbing prophetic visions as a part of this madness- while it shouldn't reveal terribly important details, it may give indicators to events linked heavily to your character.

Limited Magic Resistance

You have advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects. This effect doesn't extend to divine spells and magic. Furthermore, at the time of your creation, your creator may designate any number of entities that can bypass this effect.

Accelerated Healing

You regain a hit dice of health every minute spent outside of combat. To gain this benefit, you must enter a sleep-like state in which you do not move at all. You remain fully aware of your surroundings and can exit this state at will.
