Homebrew Canis Evolutio Species Details
Canines have been 'Man's best friend' for millennia and as mankind has changed and evolved alongside other races, so too has the canine species. Though no one knows exactly when the shift occurred, canines began to exhibit more and more intelligence; more skill in areas their once masters excelled. In a realm filled with varying races like Tortle, Grung, Tabaxi, Kenku, Yuan-Ti, and Lizardmen, it is strange wonder the peoples of The Realm never thought to see if Canines were also evolving same as they were.
Canis Evolutio's existence has only recently been brought to light as the emerging evolution of the canine species has had difficulty spreading word across The Realm in order to gain recognition and acceptance. Unfortunately, after so long of being seen as no more than simple companions, many races still have a habit of 'talking down' to members of Canis Evolutio. While they are indeed still fiercely loyal to those they call friends, they also seek to establish the independence of not only their species, but the packs they were born to as well.
The species seemingly sprung into existence overnight with many different 'packs' of varying breeds declaring their sentience and forming communities in different pockets of the Realm nearly simultaneously to one another. No matter the pack they hail from, all Canis Evolutio have an innate trust of others of their kind as they all hold the same common goal of establishing recognition for their new breed.
Since they have been apart from those that use to domesticate them, pack members of Canis Evolutio have grown sturdier than their non-evolved counterparts. They have thicker coats, tougher bodies, and now all have longer, stronger tails that are prehensile.
Canis Evolutio Traits
I Don't Need A Shield! Subtle Casters, Keen Scent, Nothing to Hide, ColorblindAbility Score Increase
Canis Evolutio are agile, adaptable creatures. They gain +2 to their Dex and +1 to any ability score of your choice
Language
Canis Evolutio know how to speak and write Common and one language of your choice, however without the aid of magic, cannot write legibly to others in the languages they are proficient in. They can, however, read their own writing fluently as well as the writings of other Canis Evolutio as if it were their own.
Size
Canis Evolutio can vary in size depending on their breed however they are typically considered Medium size. There are some that are Small and a rare few that are considered Tiny.
Keen Scent
There is nobody in the Realm that can rival the scent and tracking ability of the Canis Evoltio. You have Expertise in Survival Checks and have Advantage in Survival checks made to track a creature you have already met.
I Don't Need A Shield!
You are unable to equip Shields. You use your jaws to wield your desired weapon and can even dual wield so long as the weapons have the 'Light' or 'Finesse' properties. As a result of lacking a shield, you are rarely overburdened and have an increased carrying capacity.
Contrary to the common assumption, Canis Evolutio can use Bow-type weapons. By holding the bow with their jaws, they can use their tails to load ammunition and pull back the drawstring before aiming and firing!
Nothing to Hide
Without the dexterous digits of their former masters, what hope does a Canis Evolutio have of hiding something in a stealthy manner? You can do it if you try, but I wouldn't count on it in a pinch! You have disadvantage on all Sleight of Hand Checks.
Colorblind
Those that descend from a Canis Evolutio pack are colorblind and only able to see in varying shades of Blues, Yellows, Grays, White, and Black.
Subtle Casting
Having lived amongst the various races of The Realm for millennia and being far more adaptable than most races, Canis Evolutio have gained the ability to cast magic without the use of Somatic components unlike their former masters. Despite not having a need for it, they will often use their tails as a substitute for a somatic component.
