Homebrew Werecat Species Details

Werecats are roughly the size of a human child in their two-legged form, but would more likely be mistaken for a young elf with their sharp, angular features. Their movements often switch between graceful and lazy, and erratic and wild, at the drop of a hat. While in their four-legged form, werecats take the shape of a large cat with oversized paws and fangs.

Werecat Traits

Werecats consider themselves two-shapes, having two natural forms that they can switch between at will. You gain the following traits.

Ability Score Increase

Your Dexterity score increases by 2, and your Wisdom score increases by 1.

Age

Werecats grow rapidly in their first year, but generally only reach maturity by the age of 4 or 5. A werecat’s age is ever a mystery, sometimes even to themself, but it is believed that they can live for multiple centuries and they have not been known to show any signs of old age. You are immune to magical ageing effects.

Alignment

Werecats tend towards a neutral alignment, with most being more fascinated by oddities & interesting people than the concepts of good and evil. However, they will remember wrongs done to themselves and their kin and, should that enemy ever show weakness, a werecat will pounce without hesitation.

Size

Werecats' humanoid forms rarely exceed 5 feet tall, and they are larger than most small cats in their cat form, though not as large as lions and tigers. Your size is Small.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet, and you have a climbing speed of 20 feet.

Darkvision

Accustomed to hunting at night, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Natural Hunter

You have proficiency in the Stealth skill.

Superior Feline

You can cast the animal friendship and speak with animals spells at will, targeting only cats, without requiring any components. Wisdom is your spellcasting ability for these spells.

Retractable Claws

Your claws are natural weapons which you can use to make unarmed strikes. On a hit, you can deal 1d4 + your Dexterity modifier slashing damage instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.

Keen Smell

You have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on smell.

Two-Shape

Though you have no one true form, you are considered a shapechanger in regards to spells and effects such as Moonbeam. If an effect would reveal your true form, it instead reveals your nature by changing your current from humanoid to cat or cat to humanoid.

Shapechanger

You can make minor changes to the appearance of your humanoid features, such as your eye colour, or the size and shape of your nose, at will. These changes can reflect your current mood or be conscious choices, but you cannot change your game statistics or make yourself appear as another creature or race.

As an action, you can shift between your two and four-legged forms. While in your cat form, you cannot speak or manipulate items such as weapons, tools and spell components with your hands. You are also unable to wear or benefit from armour that hasn't been specifically crafted for you to use in your cat form (magic items can ignore this limitation at the DM's discretion).

In addition, your walking and climbing speeds each increase by 10 feet, you gain a bite attack that deals piercing damage equal to 1d6 + your Strength modifier, and you can speak telepathically to creatures within 30 feet of you, though they can't respond using this ability.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and Sylvan.
