Homebrew Divine Soul Human Species Details

"You are human, but your soul is anything but. You are destined for a much greater purpose my child; one of divine providence. Your path was laid out by the gods. You are a unicorn..."

Unicorns are undeniable icons of celestial purity, often representing the most noble and righteous of virtues. Being such a famed icon oft incurs as many assailants as admirers. As such, sometimes a divine power, or a unicorn itself, takes on a human form, appearing in the same fashion as many humans do and usually reflecting the ideals of human beauty. These beings are called divine soul humans, and their existence is one wrought by divinity.

Divine Undertaking

For a unicorn, taking on a human form is a great ordeal, often ordained by the divine power that saw the unicorn into being. When a unicorn is destined for a greater purpose, it is shunted into a human body and stripped of most of its memory and power. The unicorn is born anew as a divine soul human to an unassuming mother, and lives with a subtle divine spark for most of its youth.

Throughout its early life, a divine soul human may experience subtle signs that it bears great divine power within its soul, manifesting in very minor ways - an abnormal resistance to common sickness, fast-healing wounds, a proclivity to be caught in pillars of sunlight. It isn't until a divine soul human matures that it begins to unlock its true divine power.

Three Horns

When a divine soul human reaches puberty, its first horn starts to come in. Manifesting at first as a physical form, the divine soul human soon realizes its ability to conceal this horn, turning it invisible. In its place is a small birthmark at the center of its forehead. This birthmark sometimes bears a subtle resemblance to the icon of a celestial being, such as a good-aligned god or goddess. As a divine soul human matures further, it eventually sheds its first horn, which is replaced with a more powerful horn. As a divine soul human comes closer to realizing its true potential, its third and final horn comes in, granting it the ability to take on its true, equine form once again.

The horns of the divine soul human bear great divine power in themselves. When a divine soul human sheds one, it can gift it to someone, granting part of its power to them. A divine soul human's final horn is uniquely powerful, and can be given up to accomplish great feats of divinity, but doing so locks a unicorn into its human form forever. It is never done lightly, often culminating in the fulfillment of a unicorn's true divine purpose.

Unicorn Horn

The divine magic inherent in the horn you were born with grants you a number of abilities. You know the light cantrip. In addition, as an action, you can touch a creature and cause it to regain a number of hit points equal to your level. Once you use this trait, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest.

When you reach 3rd level, your second horn comes in, granting you all of the abilities of your first horn. In addition, you can cast the lesser restoration spell once with this trait, and you regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. Still more, as an action, you can cause your horn to transform into a divine weapon. The weapon takes the form of any simple or martial melee weapon you choose. The divine weapon is magical and deals an additional 1d6 radiant damage when you successfully hit with an attack using it. If you drop the divine weapon, you can cause it to return to your hand as a bonus action, provided it is still on the same plane of existence as you. The weapon lasts for 1 hour or until you decide to cause it to disappear, at which point it magically reverts to the form of your horn and returns to your person. Once you use this trait, you can't use it again until you finish a long rest.

When you reach 7th level, your final horn comes in, granting you all of the abilities of your previous horns. In addition, you can cast the daylight spell once with this trait as a 3rd-level spell, and you regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. You also gain the ability to take on your true form. You gain the ability to shapeshift into a Unicorn at will, using an action to do so. When you are in your true form, you have all of the statistics and abilities of a Unicorn, but you maintain your hit points, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores, and do not have access to the Unicorn's legendary actions or lair actions.

Charisma is your spellcasting ability for any of the aforementioned spells.

When you shed a horn, you can choose to bestow it upon a creature. It is a wondrous item that requires attunement. When a good-aligned creature is attuned to the horn, it gains access to all of the abilities that horn had. Only the creature you choose to bestow the horn to can attune to it, and you can choose to revoke the horn at any time, at which point it magically disappears forever.

Your final horn is a powerful magical relic. You can choose to part with it and use its divine magical power to accomplish a great feat. If you choose to do so, work with your DM to determine what effect you might be capable of producing with your horn. If you use your horn in this way, you lose access to your true form and the ability to cast daylight. You retain the abilities conferred from your first two horns, however.
