Beards of Baator

The Barbazu, also known as the Bearded Devil are traditionally known as the large ferocious berserkers of the Nine Hells of Baator that wield barbarous saw toothed glaives or black infernal axes and go into blood-crazed frenzies during battle. They are recognized by the tentacle barbs that have been compared to hellish serpents upon their faces that coil and lash of their own free will, it is this feature that gives them their namesake. The Bearded Devil have skin that can appear scaled or ridged, with the hue between deep orange to a pale grey but blue skinned or black skinned Barbazu aren’t unheard of. They have draconian features accompanied with vicious fangs and they have large bony spines erupting from their back down to their thick tail. The Bearded Devils horns tend to be a vile mockery of other races and spiral upward, it’s not uncommon for these devils to coat them in the molten metal that bubble and hiss within Hells vast foundries. Their hind legs are powerful, coated in thick bristles that allow them to cleave through their enemies with strength, almost unmatched amongst lesser devils. They tend to fight in a stooped position, bowed under the weight over their own muscles. They tower over most when stood up straight but appear shorter because of their stance.

Infernal Vaults

Bearded devils can be found anywhere battle is drawn within the Nine Hells of Baator, though they are most commonly found on the plane's first layer of Avernus. They prefer the dark endless caverns of the ashen wastelands and these vaults are home to the training pits of the Barbazu, where they combat one another in tests of strength and arms. They can also be seen wandering the plains of Baator, trying to find anything be they mortal or devil to unleash their fiery rage upon. Barbazu who follow the path to war with others of devil-kind usually find themselves as captains and enforcers, slaughtering any that meet their volatile gaze. Barbazus are often found serving dark leaders and worshipers of Archdukes of Hell on the Material Plane, where they are ruthlessly effective soldiers and executioners, they are rarely found out with the confines of a cults quarters as their temper and appearance can seldom be disguised. Warlocks and cultists normally offer a bound and helpless captive for a Bearded devil to slaughter during their summoning, lest the Barbazus fury be turned upon them, this by no means keeps the Bearded Devil placid, only momentarily sated until its bloodlust requires sacrifice once again.

Hell Hath No Fury

A Barbazus fury and rage is legendary amongst the Nine Hells of Baator and schemers and deceivers find it relatively easy to manipulate these heavy built devils. Their bloodlust is insatiable and those still under their masters domination are sent to make a bloody example of their enemies and those that have escaped control can single-handedly destroy villages, towns and reign chaos over a region. While they are furious warriors, Barbazus are not mindless monsters, they are ill-tempered, stubborn and have a feral cunning and are coveted for the berserk-like barbarism in the ranks of their masters. Barbazus rampaging along the frontlines, be it against demons in the Blood War or against holy mortals trying to serve justice upon the warriors of the damned, swinging their large infernal weapons into scores of enemies is a terrible sight that would cause even the most stalwart to flee in terror. They kill indiscriminately ally or foe in the name of their lords.

 Bearded Devil Names

Like all devils, the Bearded Devils tend to have two names - One false and one true. They keep their true names hidden from mortals lest it can be used to bind the Devil to servitude to carry out their captors’ commands. True names are used when dealing with others of devil kind. False names are used when dealing with mortals or other entities not of their ilk.

Barbazu False Example Names: Bloodoath, Firereaver, Blackhorn, Warfang, Battleclaw, Dreadlash, Doomglaive, Deathblade, Slaughterborn, Axefall, Hellruin.

Barbazu Traits

Ability Score Increase

Your Strength score increases by 2, and your Dexterity score increases by 1.

Age

Barbazus are Devil-kind and thus means you are immortal and do not age. It is not unheard of powerful Bearded Devil's to be centuries old.

Alignment

Barbazus are lawful evil and while they are barbarous and reveal in the slaughter of their enemies, they still obey the laws and customs set out by their masters.

Size

Barbazus are strong and heavy built, they stand between 6 and 7 feet tall and weigh between 240 and 300 pounds. They do however stoop, making them appear shorter. Your size is Medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

You have proficiency with glaives.

Aggressive

As a bonus action, you can move up to your speed toward an enemy of your choice that you can see or hear. You must end this move closer to the enemy than you started.

Your beard of tendrils is a hellish melee weapon, When you successfully grapple a creature, the target is lashed by the tentacles and takes slashing damage equal to 1d6.
