Homebrew Crysnai (Version 1.1) Species Details

Crystalline lab assistants originally made by the Simic Combine, some Crysnai have separated from the Simics to better express themselves. Crysnai are made from bright gems and other materials that have regular solid shapes and represent life in mineral form. At least, that's how the Simic Combine made them. Crysnai are split between being chained to their masters and expressing themselves artistically. Crysnai feel personally connected to geometry and colors and most sketch complicated designs on scraps of paper, with rainbow-colored shapes overlapping each other in infinite fractal patterns.

Physically, Crysnai resemble humanoids cut from iridescent gemstones, gleaming automatons of nature. Some have animal features and appear to be colorful half-breeds of myth and man. This is a result of Simic scientists designing their Crysnai's appearance to one that they enjoy, typically from the natural world. In theory, Crysnai can look like whatever and even change their appearance over years of time, but many keep the look their masters gave them out of ease.

In recent years, independently-minded Crysnai have gathered around a young upstart named Corun Glittergleam, a name they have given themself as most Crysnai are given a number or nickname related to their appearance. These "Gleamers" tend to sneak away or talk their way out of being servants to Simic scientists, but there have been an alarming number of cases where Gleamers use violence to separate themselves, sometimes killing their creators in the process. Corun has no comment on these incidents, and some even suspect that they don't mind Simics suffering for keeping Crysnai as slaves.

Though very attuned to concepts of beauty, Crysnai see through an arithmetic lens and are more concerned with result than intent. Crysnain artwork tends to err on the abstract when observed by non-Crysnai, with its impossibly complex linework and paints that seem to have no purpose. But, to a Crysnai, these works make perfect sense and can even be evocative. Fractals are especially common in Crysnain art, appearing in the majority of pieces.

Crysnai are logically minded and moral, and tend to lean toward lawful and good alignments. Crysnai are attracted to spells for their prevalence in nature and scientific rigor, and are commonly Artificers, Druids, or Wizards. Crysnain Bards are uncommon but not unheard of, given their artistic leanings. The occasional Crysnai will sometimes seek magical prowess from a higher power, usually becoming Clerics, but Crysnain Warlocks have been rumored to exist.

Independent Crysnai lean toward creativity and freedom, and as such commonly join the Izzet League or the Selesnya Conclave. The more vengeful Crysnai are typically Boros League soldiers. Other Crysnai are more obsessed with patterns and science than is sane and return to the Simic Combine, but as devout researchers rather than laborers. A few Crysnai value peace through order highly enough to join the Azorius Senate, but such individuals are rare.

Crysnai (Version 1.1) Traits

Crysnai are geometric masters and free souls. Still, they have inherited many benefits from their Simic creators.

Engineered Speeds

Crysnai were designed to be adaptable and mobile. Crysnai have a walking speed of 30 feet. In addition, Crysnai were built with their master's environment in mind. As such, every Crysnai has a 30 feet speed of one of the following:

  • Burrowing
  • Climbing
  • Flying
  • Swimming

Density Control

Crysnai can expand and retract to better suit their circumstances. For 10 x their character level minutes per day, Crysnai can gain the benefits of either enlarge or reduce, as per the spell enlarge/reduce. The Crysnai must choose one effect or the other at a time. Using this ability requires a bonus action to focus on their crystalline body. Crysnai needn't use this time all at once, but it must be spent in 1-minute increments at least.

Made of Minerals

Crysnai biology differs from the norm. Because they are made from solid crystals, Crysnai do not need to breathe and are unaffected by gas effects and other effects and circumstances that require a creature to breathe. Crysnai drink water, but are lithovores otherwise, requiring rocks to live. Crysnai are otherwise like normal humanoids.

Crystalline Defense

Crysnain forms lend themselves to higher pain tolerance and survival. Crysnai get 1 extra hit point every time they gain a level and have resistance to piercing damage. However, given their rigid forms, Crysnai also have vulnerability to bludgeoning damage.

Ability Score Improvements

Crysnai are mathematically gifted and physically stable. You gain plus 2 to your Intelligence score and plus 1 to your Constitution score.

Age, Height, and Weight

Crysnai are born fully conscious upon creation. Crysnai bodies attract souls the same as any normal organic body would, and Crysnai grow slowly throughout their life if they or someone else doesn't bother to clip new growths. The secrets to creating Crysnai are jealously guarded by the Simic Combine and the Crysnai themselves. Crysnai tend to live until they are shut down, either as a decommissioned robot would be or in a violent end to a life of independence. Crysnai can live for as long as they like and have the power to shut themselves down and return their souls to nature, but this hardly ever happens, because Crysnai are always finding new purposes to fulfill.

Crysnai are naturally made anywhere from 4 feet to 7 feet tall, the most specialized specimens going a few inches beyond those limits. Being made of only solid material with few internal gaps, Crysnai can weigh hundreds of pounds, averaging somewhere between 200 and 300. Your size is Medium.

Crysnai are sometimes made beyond normal terms, but such creations are either unstable and illegal or so important as to have extra precautions against individualism, lest they cease their creator's intended duties.

Languages

Crysnai learn the languages of their creator and masters. Choose two non-secret languages that your Crysnai has been taught from birth.
