Homebrew Axolotl Species Details

Salamanders that never fully grew up, the Axolotl are an amphibious race who, instead of undergoing metamorphosis, maintain their larval form into adulthood.

Slimy but Cute

Though not related to them, the Axolotl have been described as "Walking Fish" and with such a powerful tail and body shape, it is easy to see how one could make this mistake. The Axolotl breathe underwater via six feathery gills around their neck, with three on each side of the head. Their heads and bodies are rather wide, while their limbs are proportionally small, making movement outside of the water rather slow for them, but underwater have been known to be quite fast.

Axolotl have a wide range of coloration and patterns, varying among tribes, regions, and sometimes even widely within individual families. The most common colorations are brown/tan with gold speckles and an olive undertone, as well as pink with black eyes, but countless variations exist, including gold with gold eyes, gray, orange, jet black, speckled, and even a rare phosphorescent green variation has been seen.

Aquatic Heritage

Axolotl are most at home in large bodies of freshwater and underground, but as a resilient race, they quickly adopted to life under the sea as well, and more recently some have ventured onto land. Though they typically keep to their own fishing communities, they are a friendly race that has been known to be welcoming of outsiders and are rather curious of other races. This curiosity has led to some taking up merchant and diplomatic professions or setting off as adventurers.

Ability Score Increase

Your Constitution Score increases by 2 and your Wisdom Score increases by 1.

Axolotl Regeneration

While taking a short rest, in addition to regaining health normally, you can regain an additional amount of health equal to twice your level. Once you use this trait, you can't use it again until you finish a long rest. Additionally, if you lose a limb or digit (a hand, an arm, a foot, a leg, finger, toe or a similar body part), but do not die, the part regrows over the course of the next seven days unless a functioning replacement is added before seven days conclude. If you die and are brought back to life, any limbs that you are missing when you are brought back to life do not grow back in this way until regrown another way.

Darkvision

Thanks to your aquatic heritage, you have superior vision in dark and dim Conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in Darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in Darkness, only Shades of Gray.

Amphibious lifestyle

You are able to breathe both air and water.

Genetic Resilience

You have advantage on saving throws against being poisoned, and you have resistance to poison damage.
You are immune to disease.

Sunlight Sensitivity

You have disadvantage on attack rolls and on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight when you, the target of your attack, or whatever you are trying to perceive is in direct sunlight.

Ranging from 2.5’ to 3.5’ and 20 to 40 lbs, your size is small

Neoteny

Never undergoing metamorphosis like other amphibians, axolotls reach their adult size by the age of 12, but do not typically possess the maturity of an adult until around 20. Their life span is 150 years.

Speed

Much more at home under the water than on land, you have a Walking Speed of 25 ft and a Swimming Speed of 50 ft.
