Homebrew Dracotaur Species Details

The rare offspring of one Dragonborn and one Centaur parent, Dracotaur are few and far-between. Though upbringing will always play a role in how one develops, most will be fiercely loyal to their family - whether they're blood-related or chosen.

No Two Alike

Many features can vary strongly, with both Centaur and Dragonborn genes being quite dominant. The upper torso of Dracotaur will always have the same "humanoid" shape of both parents, while their lower half may remain horse-like or, on some occasions, recall the forms of their dragon ancestors past, becoming less equine and more reptilian. Facial structures can range from fully draconic to barely scaled, though most possess horns. Some struggle to grow hair on their heads and faces, while others may have full, long locks, and all will have smaller, pointed ears. Their tails will resemble those of a dragon, some being spiked, while others grow tufts of hair down their full body length. On rare occasions, Dracotaur may even have wings, though they're rarely ever strong enough to carry the beastfolk.

Much like Dragonborn, Dracotaur's bloodlines may fall in line with those of their dragon ancestors, and may match their parents in the associated elemental efficiencies — red, green, blue, white, black, gold, silver, brass, copper, or bronze. Most will have scales reflecting their lineage littering their face and arms much like freckles on a human, and could have hooves, claws, or even a set of each.

Two Communities in One

Centaur and Dragonborn both strongly believe in clanship and community, though some ideas vary greatly between the two races. Chosen family is just as important as those blood-related, and they're fiercely loyal to whomever they choose as their company.

A dracotaur raised by their draconic family - especially those who resemble their dragon predecessors - may be highly regarded and seen as closer to their genetic roots, and guided from a young age towards taking more spritual roles or professions. Those resembling more closely their equine ancestry may be raised as workers or messengers, their increased stamina and speed valued for their efficiency.

On the other side of the coin, dracotaur raised following their centaur roots may be encouraged to break free from the traditions that their mere existence already questions. While welcomed with open arms, their mammalian kin will value their individuality, urging them to explore themselves and connect with all aspects that make them, them.

Regardless of which side they are raised by, or if it's both, it's far more common that they will be accepted by their family than not.

Dracotaur Traits

Your unique heritage manifests in a variety of traits you share with both dragonborn and centaur.

Charge

If you move at least 30 feet straight toward a target and then hit it with a melee weapon attack on the same turn, you can immediately follow that attack with a bonus action, making one attack against the target with your hooves or claws.

Quadruped Build

You count as one size larger when determining your carrying capacity and the weight you can push or drag. In addition, any climb that requires hands and feet is especially difficult for you because of your beastly legs. When you make such a climb, each foot of movement costs you 4 extra feet, instead of the normal 1 extra foot.

Survivor

You have proficiency in one of the following skills of your choice: Animal Handling, Medicine, Nature, or Survival.

Ability Score Increase

Your Strength score increases by 2, and either your Charisma or your Wisdom score increases by 1.

Age

Dracotaur age more closely to their centaur ancestry.

Fey

Your creature type is fae, rather than humanoid.

Alignment

Dracotaur alignments will be influenced heavily by how they are raised. Cenatur tend to lean more neutral, while Dragonborn can be extreme to either end of the spectrum.

Size

Dracotaur are taller and heavier than humans, standing well over 6 feet tall, reaching at least 4 feet to the wither, and weigh averaging anywhere from 250-400 pounds. Your size is Medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 40 feet.

Draconic Ancestry

You have draconic ancestry. Choose one type of dragon from the Draconic Ancestry table. Your breath weapon and damage resistance are determined by the dragon type, as shown in the table.

Draconic Ancestry

Black Acid 5 by 30 ft. line (Dex. save)
Blue Lightning 5 by 30 ft. line (Dex. save)
Brass Fire 5 by 30 ft. line (Dex. save)
Bronze Lightning 5 by 30 ft. line (Dex. save)

Breath Weapon

You can use your action to exhale destructive energy. Your draconic ancestry determines the size, shape, and damage type of the exhalation. When you use your breath weapon, each creature in the area of the exhalation must make a saving throw, the type of which is determined by your draconic ancestry. The DC for this saving throw equals 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus. A creature takes 2d6 damage on a failed save, and half as much damage on a successful one. The damage increases to 3d6 at 6th level, 4d6 at 11th level, and 5d6 at 16th level. After you use your breath weapon, you can’t use it again until you complete a short or long rest.

Damage Resistance

You have resistance to the damage type associated with your draconic ancestry.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common, and may also know Sylvan, Draconic, or both, depending on heritage.
