Homebrew Well-Adjusted Bear Species Details
NOTE: Because of D&D Beyond's terrible subscription model, this homebrew is an amalgamation of several different Bear race home-brews. I've taken liberties in which traits I like and removed the ones I don't. If you feel like anything is out of line, then it can be paired down to your needs as you see fit.
What makes a bear a 'Well Adjusted Bear'? The fuzzy paws? The sharp grin? A hand-tailored suit? They help, but a Well-Adjusted Bear at his finest has one thing most bears don't: A Job.
A Well Adjusted Bear can be found in all walks of life. The Barista at your favorite coffee shop? Could be a bear! Your boss at a high end law firm? Could be a bear! Your deplorable coworker? Could just be an idiot, but also could be a Bear?! Bears are everywhere and honestly it's surprising no one has noticed or given then any mind yet. But they are here and they are a lovely part of our daily lives now! Hug your local well-adjusted bear today!
This description is not responsible for any negative outcomes that are a direct or indirect result of hugging any well-adjusted bear.
Well-Adjusted Bear Traits
How do those Bears do it?Ability Score Increase
Your Strength score increases by 2, and your Constitution score increases by 1.
Imposing Nature
You have proficiency in the Intimidation Skill
Natural Weapons
Your front claws and fanged maw are natural weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with these attacks, you can deal 1d4 slashing damage (Claws) or 1d8 piercing damage (Fangs) instead of bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.
*Multi-Attack: If you do not use your movement you can do two claws attack. If you make one of them, you can use your bonus action to do a Bite Attack.
Powerful Build
You count as one size larger when determining your carrying capacity and the weight you can push, drag, or lift.
Bestial Body
Your ursine body makes it difficult to wear clothes and Armour, or for you to handle certain objects. Armour and weaponry may have to be custom made for you to use. Whether you can use an item or object is up to the DM's Discretion.
Languages
You know Common and Ursine. Ursine is a primitive language of growls and barks used to intimidate and alert other bears. There is no written form of Ursine other than Clan names and Bear Corporations.
Hibernator - Lazy Sleeper
Bearkin have explosive energy, but part of that comes directly from getting a good night sleep. And then some. While Elves can get their long rest in 4 hours of trance, Bearkin require 10 hours to fully recover (2 additional hours are needed). This can be reduced to 8 hours if the Bear has caffeine, coffee or black tea.
Natural Armour
You have thick, furry hide. When you aren't wearing Armour, your AC is 13+ Dex. You can use your natural Armour to determine your AC if the Armour you wear would leave you with a Lower AC.
