Homebrew Widemouth Sharkfolk Species Details

Far out in the ocean, on a secluded island known as Kanaloa live the Kaikana. Once a normal race of humans, they were chosen by Manannan to become protectors of the sea. Manannan gifted them with the power to shift into a shark-human hybrid. Over time the Kaikana honed there newly obtained gifts living a life dedicated to protecting the seas and their island.  
When not protecting the oceans kaikana are actually a very inclusive and festive people. They love competition and will commonly hold contests to allow anyone who wishes to show there strength and skill. Contrary to there outwardly appearance kaikana are not vicious they enjoy working in teams and have a strong sense of friendship. However when in battle there shark instincts take hold and they become ferocious fighters. A Kaikanas skills in combat depends on the sub-race of shark that they take after.
Kaikana live there lives from birth until the age of 15 as humans. When they turn 15 the tribe leader holds a ceremony. They perform a ritual and the boy is taken out into the ocean, where they are then surrounded by hundreds of Puffer Fish. A single Puffer Fish approaches the Kaikana's hand and inflates, piercing the center of the Kaikana's hand with a single sharp spine. Black ink begins to move up the arm creating a tattoo like marking. These markings can range in size some kaikana have as little as just there forearm covered in the tattoo while others and end up with tattoos strung across their entire body. This ritual blesses the Kaikana with the gift of the Great Whale. giving them all the abilities the Kaikana are known for including the ability to shapeshift.

Age

Kaikana have a very similar lifespan to humans, in most cases they will live to around 80 years old.

Widemouth: +2 Wis +1 Cha

Size

You are between 7 and 8 feet tall, very broad, and weigh between 300 and 400 pounds. Your size is Medium.

Natural Athlete

You have proficiency in the Athletics skill.

Blood Lust

Kaikana are in a constant battle with there shark instincts. If there are 10 or more bleeding bodies near you, you must make a DC10 Constitution saving throw. If you fail you enter Blood Lust completely losing control to your instincts and start attacking anyone near you. You immediately attack the closest target to you regardless if it is a friend or an enemy. If you fail your save you may make a DC12 Constitution check on your turn to try and regain control.

Amphibious

While in your hybrid form you are able to breath underwater.

Blood Sense

Due to the Kaikanas heightened sense of smell and shark-like instincts you can detect any traces of blood within 100ft. If the blood is on a creature it may trigger Blood Frenzy.

Blood Frenzy

If a kaikana smells blood on a creature they can choose to let their instincts take over and go into a frenzy. While in a blood frenzy you are hyper-focused on one target and must make a DC10 constitution saving throw if you want to switch to a different target. If you kill a target while in a Blood Frenzy you must make a DC10 Constitution saving throw. If you fail you eat the body of the creature you killed.

Shapeshift

Kaikana were once completely human. Even though they prefer to stay in hybrid form they still retain the ability to shift back into a human at any time.

Ocean's Blessing

As a Kaikana risks their life to protect the ocean, the ocean offers protection in exchange. Any healing done to you while in the ocean has advantage.
