Homebrew Batokin Species Details

 

"Wowww isn't this just a fine home..." Kanna stated out of the blue, right when she entered the new house. 

The place was a mess... no- an absolute wreak. The support beam of the tiny apartment home were rotting and starting to fall over, that wouldn't be good. And don't get started on the terrible stench of the place. Smelled like dead rats and pure pneumonia. Even with living her whole life in the Batokin slums, she had never seen a place so unclean in her entire life. But that's just life for people like her.. right? The stares. The name-calling, as well as the slurs. The poverty you are born with. And nothing to your name. To everyone else you're just a pesky rodent. "Taking everyone's job!" and whatnot. But stuff like that never bothered Kanna anymore, it was just life for her. At least she wouldn't be harassed by her old human neighbors anymore, everyone else here was a Batokin like herself.

"Oh well..." She looked around for a moment, debating on whether she should live here or just go back to her old home. Yeah there were nasty and rude people there... but at least the house wasn't falling apart. But she knew she couldn't go back. She just couldn't. She sighed. "Welp- guess I better get my stuff then."

 

Like the Tiefling, you are greeted with stares and whispers... or more like shouts. Shouts of name-calling and slurs. "We don't want you!" They say, "You rodents are taking our jobs!" Other races don't see you as equals. You are just a criminal- a thief to them. It's the stereotype you were born with, and the one you keep forever. People may never understand you, but that doesn't stop you from fighting back and doing your best to change the world for your kind and make things better. Batokins are a small race but have the courage and fire as a giant. When they see bad things being done, they do everything in their power to do what's right. They are some lil' fighters- that's for sure.

Humanoid But... Bat-Like

Batokins come from.... well... bats! They look human in a way.. but have the features of a bat still. Instead of normal ears they have bat ears. Long and pointy, but also very fluffy! These ears can hear stuff from a mile away, and maybe even more. Batokins of course, also have wings! Large and dark ones that end up being at least 5 feet long in length. But some can end up being up to 8 feet! These wings are extremely important and allows Batokins to fly place to place. Although their wings aren't the strongest or best at flying for long periods of time as Batokins tend to be more on the heavier side. Batokins are also very short, only going up to 5'1 feet, this even goes to males (Unless they are the subrace of Batokins; the Kyodaina. Which are a subrace of Batokins that are basically just way bigger. Instead of only being the most at 5'1 feet, they can get as tall as 7 feet!) The hair on Batokins tend to be dark blues, dakr purples, black, grey, or white. There are also some Batokins that have natural highlights such as; some one having dark blue hair with white streaks underneath. It can be quite common for that to happen. Batokins also most definitely have body hair.... or more like fur. They have soft and dark fur around their ears, tail, and wings. The eye color on Batokins also tend to be black or red and skin tones are quite dark as well with dark tans or dark brown skin. 

Life in The Slums of The Human Kingdom

The Batokin don't really have a "kingdom" or royalty or anything. They have towns and cities that once used to be beautiful, but after losing the Battle of Kōmori, the humans got control over the Batokin lands and made it go into poverty. The Batokin cities and towns are considered slums or the ghetto. Which for good reason- crime is rampant, violence, poverty, etc. Unfortunately it's even common to see dead bodies in the streets from hunger or a bad gang fight. And most Batokin aren't able to get out of this environment- not a lot of places trust Batokins because of the stereotype that they are thieves and ruthless killers. And not even just that but the endless poverty laid upon them makes it near impossible to get out of the slums. It's so bad to the point that many families can't even afford to take their kids to a good and proper school.

Kōmori On The Holidays

Even though a lot of people only see the Batokin as disgusting creatures, they actually have a really intricate and beautiful culture with many festivals, holidays, and traditions. There are quite a bit of small festivals and holidays in the Batokin culture, but there are two that are the most important to them. Battogibingu and Isshugōn. Battogibingu  is a lot like Christmas when it comes to giving presents to others. There is a twist though- instead of someone buying a gift for someone or making one, they sacrifice a valued item from themselves to give to someone else. It's basically to tell someone that you care about them to the point that you would sacrifice something that meant so much to you. Many families gift heritage items down to their children or give away wedding rings or basically anything that is valuable to them! This holiday goes on around when spring is entering into summer. Isshugōn is a large festival where Batokin families make homemade lanterns and write down their wishes on a piece of paper then put it in the lantern. On the last day of Isshugōn (Isshugōn is a full week in the wintertime), fellow Batokins group up in the middle of their towns or cities and light up all the lanterns and send them into the night sky. They do this in hopes that their goddess, Megami, will find the ashes of their wishes in the clouds and grant them. The rest of the week that Isshugōn takes place there are food vendors everywhere, large parties that go on for days, and toys are given out to children throughout the week as celebration. There is also traditional wear for the females in Isshugōn! There is a dress that females wear thats called; Ryyōshōo. Its a plain white pullover dress that is decorated with a red sailor-type collar, and the sleeves are cut in a way to make them look like bat wings. These are a luxury to the Batokin as they are typically made with fine silks and materials. Most female children are either handed down a Ryyōshōo by past family members who once wore them or are given a new one every year on holidays. A Ryyōshōo dress is typically from 200 gp to 10,000 gp! Depending on the quality of course. 

The Appetite Of A Bat

The Batokin have a very simple diet, especially since many are poor and cannot afford expensive meals. Most meals consist of rice and some sort of protein (specifically meat). Popular meals are rice and teriyaki chicken, as well as sweet pork with rice. There are some festival food though too! One of the most popular festival foods is egguraisu. Egguraisu is a basic meal consisting of white rice and eggs, mixed together and fried. Many pair this with a bit of ketchup on the side. Another big and popular festival meal is Satō-iri gyōza. Satō-iri gyōza are dumplings with a filling of cinnamon icing, then steamed for 20 minutes. This is a huge food when it comes to Batokin children on holidays. There are many other Batokin meals as well that are heavily inspired by Japanese cuisine. Many Batokins end up being very good cooks and bakers.

Batokin Names

Like human names, many Batokins keep the name that their parents or guardian gave them. Sometimes many gang member Batokins change their names to simple sayings to change their identity. Such things like: Killer, Death, Retribution, Resistance, Stabber, Flayer, etc. Many if not, all Batokin names are inspired or are Japanese names. If you don't like any of the names below, you can totally look up Japanese names and use them instead.

Male Batokin Names: Kuo, Katichi, Saichi, Kaeda, Jimjin, Himichi, Douji, Jin, Kaito, Yoshi, Kiro

Female Batokin Names: Maika, Sen, Humi, Shugā, Amai, Kurīmu, Hatsune, Yonaka, Hoshi, Nichibotsu, Yoru, 

Child Batokin Names: Chi-chi, Mami, Mimi, Madoka, Homu, Sakura, Saki, Jiji

Keep Your Eye On The Bats

People tend to be suspicious of Batokins, especially since their cities and towns are filled to the brim with crime and thieves. Humans have also ingrained the idea into people that Batokins are worthless thieves that should be under control, which is why Batokin lands are still under Human rule. Whenever a Batokin enters a shop or goes into a farmer's market, many keep their eyes on them or refuse service completely. There are actually many protests in Batokin cities about how others (specifically Humans) treat them inhumanly- and it's a current problem that is on the rise.

Ability Score Increase

Your Dexterity score increases by 2, and your Charisma score increases by 2.

Savage Bite

You can bite hard into an enemy by using your naturally given bat fangs. This can only be done right in front of you.

Wind Slam

With using your bat wings, you can push a large force of air\wind towards an enemy as a attack.

Age

Batokins mature at the same rate as humans but live a few years longer.

Alignment

Many Batokins are very chaotic and loud, and although many Batokins become criminals, many are still good at heart. The most common alignment for Batokins is Chaotic Good and Chaotic Evil.

Expert With Melee

Batokins are quite an expert when it comes to hand to hand or melee combat. Because of this, you gain an expertise for melee attacks.

Size

Your base walking speed is 30 feet. And your base flying speed is 50.

You can see in darkness (shades of gray) up to 60 ft.
