Homebrew Bjorskig (Bear-folk) Species Details
Bjorskigare strange creatures. An odd mix of Giant blood and fey-kind, the Bjorskig resemble bears, though with the ability to walk, converse, and live as sentient beings. Their unique heritage, as well as their large size, often strikes fear into the hearts of other humanoid species, but Bear-folk is more than a sum of their heritage. They have close communities with an important sense of family and loyalty, as well as strength and endurance.
Innate Protectors
For Bjorskig, protecting those who cannot protect themselves is extremely important. This duty extends to more than protection from physical violence. Their societies are built around rasing each other up and helping the lowest members of society. Neglecting ones family or community is seen as completely tabboo.
This compulsion to protect makes the Bjorskig a close community, where secrecy or exploitation are strange and rare occurrences. They tend to help without expectation of payment, and simply because they felt the need to do it.
Playful Competition
While constantly willing to help those in need, Bjorskig are also always down for some friendly competition. Whether a wrestling match or political debate, they have no hesitation in challenging each other, and they love winning these often petty competitions. Sometimes these playful battles can go a step too far and result in injury or hurt egos, but they are always willing to help the loser up and back on their feet - with some light teasing, of course.
This dynamic creates a very strange community dynamic of seeing two Bjorskig go from working together to fighting back to working together all within minutes, which can be quite surprising for outsiders. This becomes all the more strange to non-Borskig when a Borskig adopts one into their family groups, as a serious discussion can turn near instantaneously into a wrestling match, confusing most other races.
Rabble Rousers
The Borskigs tendency to be loud and what could even appear as temperamental to other humanoid races, as well as their large physical forms, often results in the Bear-folk being excluded from non-Borskig communities. Due to their communal nature, this often depresses the Borskig that venture out of their family groups and makes them feel cut off from the surrounding world. For this reason, the Borskig will commonly join adventuring parties, where their antics are less frowned upon and they can form strong bonds with those around them.
Borskig Names
Borskig names are usually long and complex. They are named for both their family, their clan, and their kingdom, as well as having a unique name, and sometimes even another name granted from their accomplishments in life or unique traits. These added names can expand over their lives, to the point where introductions can take many minutes.
