Homebrew Sudalix Species Details

The Sudalix are an odd race. Born out of the natural fluctuations of magic, they pop into existence out of nothing, fully matured and with an innate knowledge of the arcane powers that created them.

Uncertain Lineage

When they first encountered other sentient races, they were mistakenly categorized as a new breed of Ugoloths. It soon became apparent that these intelligent, wiley creatures, who had been given the name of Psuedoloths, were neither fiend, nor celestial, nor any other known heritage. They came to call themselves Sudalix, but many arcane scholars took to calling them “Woven” since their physical form spontaneously sprang from the magical weave of the multiverse. Despite their strange origins, many Sudalix have strong ties to dragon-kind. Both races have a natural understanding of magic, and are able to wield it through physical abilities from birth. Sudalix also have a native understanding of the Draconic language, which seems to stem from their deep, innate knowledge of arcane magic.

Many and Magical Forms

All Sudalix share a few physical characteristics in their body shape: small and thin, with large, almost goblinoid heads. However, they vary wildly in appearance based on their lineage. Each Sudalix seems to favor one of the ten magical essences, or damage types. Fire Sudalix have cracked skin, and radiate a glowing light similar to lava. Lightning Sudalix have small, needle-like hairs that channel tiny strands of electric current. Death Sudalix appear withered and almost skeletal, but can be just as lively as their Light cousins, whose smooth pearlescent skin shimmers ever so faintly. Despite their physical forms taking on the attributes of individual magical types, Sudalix have shown themselves to be extremely proficient in all of the schools of magic. Sudalix have also been observed changing appearance to match the form of spell they are casting at the time.

Curious Outcasts

Despite their arcane heritage, Sudalix are not relegated solely to the magical arts. Their lithe form and natural quickness also lend them to matters of finesse. Combined with their sharp wit, they are natural born engineers, scientists, and arcane researches. However, many still see the Sudalix as a race to be feared. Their uncertain origins have led many to be ostracized for fear that they really are a new type of fiend; devils or demons sent to poison society from within. Many Sudalix strike out from their adopted homes, or simply never find a home to begin with, making them strong-willed, thrill-seeking adventurers.

Sudalix Names

Born without parents, every Sudalix chooses their own name. But that's not to say they can't get help choosing a name. Some name themselves after folk heroes, or even take on the name of an adoptive parent who cared for them after they were spawned. Others simply prefer names built of the most enjoyable noises, which leads many of them to have draconic sounding names with hard consonants.

Part of choosing a name also involves choosing a gender. Their method of creation means that Sudalix do not have the typical biological genders associated with other humanoid races. As with so many aspects of themselves, each Sudalix defines how they wish to be perceived.

Age

Sudalix are spawned from raw magical power, and are created fully mature. They are known to live anywhere from 40 to 200 years.

Alignment

Born without parents or a home, many Sudalix wander the world left to their own curiosities. Their erratic lifespans push them to achieve greatness quickly, with very little regard as to the consequences. Most Sudalix are of chaotic alignments, seeing little value in laws or societies that either don’t respect them, or simply don’t make sense for a creature capable of incredible intellect from birth.

Sudalix are between 3 and 4 feet tall and average about 30 pounds. Your size is Small.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Arcane Heritage

Each Sudalix takes on the characteristics of a particular type of evocation energy. Choose one type of heritage from the Arcane Heritage table. Each heritage provides resistance to a type of damage, and also determines the ability used to save from your Arcane Exertion trait. Also, whenever you cast a spell that deals damage of the same type that you have resistance to from this trait, you can re-roll any 1’s on the spell’s damage dice, but you must keep the second roll.

Arcane Exertion

You can channel the naturally magical essence of your body to deal damage to your enemies. As an action, you can spend up to half of your total hit dice to create either a beam or a blast of energy. The damage done by the beam or blast is the same type you have resistance to from your Arcane Heritage trait. The damage dealt by this trait also benefits from your Arcane Heritage trait's ability to reroll 1’s on the damage dice.

If you choose a beam, make a ranged spell attack against a target within 90 feet. On a hit they take damage equal to the hit dice you spent. Intelligence is the spellcasting modifier for this attack.

If you choose a blast, every creature within 10 feet of you must make a saving throw (save DC = 8 + proficiency modifier + your Constitution modifier). On a failed save they take damage equal to the hit dice you spent, or half damage on success. The type of saving throw is determined by consulting the Arcane Heritage table.

Natural Understanding

You gain proficiency in the Arcana skill.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and Draconic.
