Homebrew Wolves Species Details

There are three variations of wolves

Wolves Traits

Being natures top dog, there are several benifits your race has gained via evolution to maintain their position within the top of the food chain.

Ability Score Increase

Your Strength score increases by 1, and your Dexterity score increases by 1.

Age

Due to the aging difference between the different types of wolf present, the most that can be said here, while remaining accurate, is that they age quickly when compaired to most other races, reaching breeding maturity in only a few years, hitting their physical peak near their first decade, and their maximum age of between 35-50 (depending on the type of wolf) being speculative, due to a wolfs lifestyle almost ensuring death long before then.

Alignment

Both Grey Wolves and their larger cousins, the Dire Wolves, are Neutral towards the other races, not having any form of malice towards them due to not being able to understand the damage they cause whenever their hunts victimize people in some fashion. Winter Wolves, however, have shown to be intelligent enough to understand this, and have more of a Neutral-Evil classification, due to them tending to ignore this fact, yet not actively plot or needlessly kill/harm individuals and their property.

Size

Wolves can range between medium-large when fully grown, depending, with Grey Wolves being the smallest, and Winter Wolves being the largest.

  • Grey Wolves average between 3 to 3 1/2 feet at the shoulder, with a body length of around 4 1/2 feet, their tail adding an additional 2 feet usually. Weight wise, Grey Wolves can weigh up to 110 pounds, depending on both age and gender. Their size category is Medium when fully grown.
  • Dire Wolves average between 3 1/2 to 4 feet at the shoulder, with a body length of around 5 1/2 feet, their tail adding an additional 3 feet usually. Weight wise, Dire Wolves can weigh up to 175 pounds, depending on both age and gender. Their size category is Large when fully grown.
  • Winter Wolves average between 4 1/2 to 5 feet at the shoulder, with a body length around 6 1/2 feet, their tail adding an additional 3 1/2 feet usually. Weight wise, Winter Wolves can weigh up to 210 pounds, depending on both age and gender. Their size category is Large when fully grown.

Speed

Grey Wolves are the slowest of their kin, having a 40 foot walking speed, whereas both the Dire and Winter wolves have a 50 foot walking speed. [If you decide to play a younger version of any of these, decrease the size category by 1(Grey Wolves remain medium), height and length by 1 foot, as well as speed by 10 feet]

Languages

You can speak with other canid creatures easily, can convey and understand simple conversation with other beast-type creatures, and can understand, but not speak, Common and any other languages you are proficient in.

Quadrupedal Gait

Due to the nature of your gait, ropes cannot be traversed, sheer walls are an impossibility without help, and ladders count as difficult terrain depending on their angle. However, you are able to traverse nearly any plant based magical or non magic difficult terrain as if under the Freedom of Movement spell. (This is at the DM's discretion, and you do not gain the benefit to escape bindings, and water still counts as difficult terrain to you)

Natural Weapon

Your jaws count as a natural weapon, capable of dealing aggrivated damage to your opponents, and dragging them to the ground. With a successfull attack, you deal piercing damage equal to 1d6 + your Strength modifier, and once per turn can also attempt to knock prone your opponent, forcing them to make a Strength saving throw vs your DC (8 + Strength modifier + proficiency bonus, unless replaced by class feature), or be knocked prone.

Dire Wolf

The Dire Wolves are most easily identified due to a combination of their size, as well as the jagged bone growths around their shoulders.

Ability Score Increase

Strength score increases by 1

Knockdown

By charging at least 15 feet towards an enemy, you can make an attack as a bonus action. With a successful hit, the creature takes damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength modifier, and is forced to make a Strength saving throw vs your DC (8 + Strength modifier + Proficiency bonus, unless replaced by class feature),  or be either shoved 15 feet or knocked prone.

Grey Wolf

The Grey Wolf, the smallest, yet most widespread of all the wolf types, being acclimated to near an terrain.

Ability Score Increase

Dexterity increases by 1.

Ambush Predator

  • At the DM's discretion, when utilizing stealth in a natural location, creatures have disadvantage when trying to spot you.
  • When unseen by a creature before attacking, your first attack of the turn has advantage, and if the attack hits, the creature (of Large size and smaller) must succeed  a Strength saving throw at disadvantage vs your DC (8 + Str Modifier + Proficiency Bonus, unless replaced by class ability), or be knocked prone.

Winter Wolf

Winter Wolves, the most reclusive out of their cousins, tend to be found around areas that either snow often, or that retain their cold climate year-round, simply due to the fact that their bodies have a natural internal temperature between 20 above, and 20 blow 0, not to mention that their pelts are prized by both sanctioned hunters, and poachers, due to their quality as a fur, and potency as both a potion ingredient  and magic item when properly prepared.

Ability Score Increase

Constiution score increases by 1.

Blood of Ice

You have a resistance Cold Damage, however, hot climates drain you faster than most, giving you 1 point of exhaustion per day without temperatures lower than 30 degrees. It is at the DM's discretion if magically generated cold (excluding your frost breath) can keep this effect at bay.

Frost Breath

As an action, you can make a 15 foot cone frost attack, forcing all those caught within that space to make a Dexterity saving throw against your DC (8 + Constitution modifier + Proficiency bonus). On a failure, those effected take 2d6 cold damage, wheras those who succeed take half. The damage of your Frost Breath increases by 1d6 at 6th level, 11th level, and 16th.
