Homebrew Ainok Species Details
Ainok are fierce survivalists on every world they live on. Appearing canine and wild, Ainok are deceptively advanced, and have access to incredibly high quality armor and weapons. Their ancestry lends them enhanced senses and survivability, and they have a curious desire to fit in with a pack, whether composed of other Ainok, or a team of adventurers. They are valuable as allies in the wilderness, and have a loyalty to the group.
On the world of Tarkir, Desert Ainok live among the Dromoka clan as equals, and are expert scavengers, beast drivers, and survivalists, granting them much renown within the clan. Within the Atarka clan, Mountain Ainok act as hunters and trappers, though their numbers there are dwindling, as the great dragons of the mountains favor the canine hunters as exquisite meals
On the world of Terulene, the Ainok are nocturnal and elusive. They rarely appear to other societies, and hunt across the plane in packs, keeping to themselves. Additionally, they use passages through both Feywild and Shadowfell to traverse great distances, and it is rumored that they hide great cities in both planes. However, sometimes it becomes necessary for an Ainok to set out by themselves, and when one of these "Night People" shows up in some out of the way inn, it's an omen that something big is coming.
On other planes, Ainok may take the on the traits of any of their aforementioned brethren. Desert Ainok are likely to be the most common and well known, thanks to their social nature and dedication to their packs. They may act as guides through the wilderness or desert scavengers, fully capable of providing for those lost in the dunes. Mountain Ainok may be elusive mysteries of the mountains, hunters who wrestle the greatest of prey or strange wardens of a hidden icy paradise. Night Ainok have the greatest potential to visit other worlds. They claim the Raven Queen as their patron goddess and hunt her prey across myriad worlds. Their skills allow them to slay Liches, Necromancers, and even Elder Brains should the need arise. They keep their activities hidden, should their quarry discover their existence.
Roleplaying an Ainok: Most Ainok of Terulene originate as outlanders, coming from small family packs, socializing only with other packs, avoiding other humanoids if at all possible. If you are to set out on an adventure, consider why you left your pack. What happened to them? Did you choose to set out? Were you given an omen that preordained your quest? If you are playing on another world, consider how the people react to you. Do they fear you? Do they see you as commonplace?
Age: Ainok reach maturity at 14, but some can live for up to 150 years.
Size: Desert Ainok are the shortest of their kin, only standing at a 5-foot-8 average and typically only deviating by a few inches. Night Ainok stand slightly taller than the average human, at 6 feet average, with just as much range in height. Mountain Ainok are not only bulkier than their more common counterparts but claim the greatest heights among their kind. Mountain Ainok reach 7 feet tall frequently, all the better for fighting the great monsters of the north. Your size is medium.
