Homebrew Tempest Species Details

The will of a warrior is fiery and powerful, and perhaps even more so when the very soul of that will is exposed. The tempest is an undead creature of fiery origins, hailing from the Elemental Plane of Fire or the Nine Hells; they are forged from the fiery beings from those planes, perhaps a fire genie or an archdevil, who design the tempest to be unflinching pillars of might to serve them. However, some tempests may find their way into the Material Plane - perhaps with or without independence from the creatures that created them - to find their own way through life.

Soul Flames

The tempest are undead creatures that have been raised from ancient skeletal bones and imbued with fiery magic from the powerful beings that forged their new lives. Their bodies resemble skeletal bodies, but the bones that hold them together are charred and blackened with a soot like colour. However, a tempest is missing what would usually be a skeletal ahead. Instead it mantains a fiery flame that ranges in height, depending on the height of the tempest itself. It's fire starts from it's visible ribcage, glowing all throughout the chest, and raises up and through the neck to create the heart of the fire itself. The flame is the key part of their existence: if the flame is put out through powerful means by the creator itself, then the tempest will be expelled from its vessel. The colour of the fire is usually a natural orange, but colours can also include - but are not limited to - crimson red, cobalt blue or a jade green.

Independent and Serious

Many expect the tempest to be furious and hot-headed beings, which they can be with enough level of aggression, but typically a tempest will be surprisingly collected and serious about anything they do. They often lack any sense of humour, preferring to keep professional in their work. However, a tempest has a deep respect for those who are strong and will find it worthwhile to form alliances in their work.

Independence means a great deal to the tempests. Being creatures formed in flame for the purpose of battle, those who leave this will be faced with the path of forging their own destinies and identities. A tempest may adopt bits and pieces from cultures they connect with most or will create their own kind of living.

The tempest lack homelands on the Material Plane, being so rare in their existence that there are simply not enough to form some kind of a culture or community. Most tempests will remain as travelling warriors for the rest of their lives, working to mantain the soul flame that keeps them alive. Some might work as mercenary adventurers, others may join militaristic factions. A few may also seek out a return to the planes where they originated from.

Tempest Names

A tempest usually lacks a name when being created in the other planes - their master usually will view a tempest as merely expenadable soldiers, or not hold any real love and care for them, thus find no need to name them. Instead, a tempest will usually name themselves. This is extremely common after finding their freedom from their creator as they start to forge their own independence and identity. Tempest names may be stolen from any cultures they connect with most, or may take names from the infernal language if they originate from the Nine Hells. Both may instead take names based on their flames, either by colour or simply by element
