Homebrew Ai'ngari Species Details

Born of stone made flesh through dark and ancient magics in the depths of the Shadowfell, these monstrous humanoid creatures are often informally referred to as gargoyles and derogatorily as "goyls". They are daunting behemoths with fiendish wings, sharp fangs, and wicked claws. Their eyes glow bright like hot coals and their skin is hard like the stone they were born from, retaining the properties of the various minerals that were used to create them such as, but not limited to marble, granite, slate, and even obsidian.

It is speculated that ai'ngari were created by dark wizards of the shadowfell in eons long past, presumably to serve as soldiers on their behalf or as guardians of their fortresses and possessions. And while many ai'ngari still reside in the shadowfell, a large number of them also immigrated over to the Material Plane millennia ago.

Ai'ngari Traits

Ai'ngari have various shared traits that set them apart as fierce creatures of the night.

Ability Score Increase

Your Strength score increases by 2 and your Dexterity score increases by 1.

Age

Ai'ngari mature and age at the same rate as humans, but they live up to three times as long with an average natural lifespan of 240 years.

Claws

Your claws are natural weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you can deal slashing damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength modifier.

Damage Resistance

You have resistance against slashing, piercing, cold, and fire damage.

Darkvision

Accustomed to midnight landscapes and the darkness of the shadowfell, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 120 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can also discern a short range of color in darkness.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write common and one extra language of your choice.

Menacing

You gain proficiency in the Intimidation skill.

Powerful Build

You count as one size larger when determining your carrying capacity and the weight you can push, drag, or lift.

Shadow Kindred

You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can’t put you to sleep.

Size

Ai'ngari range from under 7 to over 8 feet tall and have powerful builds. Your size is Large.

Speeds

Your base walking speed is 30 feet and your base flying speed is 40 feet.

Stone's Endurance

You can focus yourself to occasionally shrug off injury. When you take damage, you can use your reaction to roll a d12. Add your Constitution modifier to the number rolled, and reduce the damage by that total. After you use this trait, you can’t use it again until you finish a short or long rest.

Trance

Ai'ngari can sleep if they want to, but they don’t actually need to. Instead, they meditate deeply, remaining semiconscious, for 4 hours a day. (The Common word for such meditation is “trance.”) While meditating, you can dream after a fashion; such dreams are actually mental exercises that have become reflexive through years of practice. After resting in this way, you gain the same benefit that a human does from 8 hours of sleep.

Shadowfell Ai'ngari

After the ai'ngari hordes overthrew their dark mage masters and achieved liberation, many of them chose to make a new life for themselves in the Material Plane, but much of their number chose to remain in the Shadowfell to build their own civilization in their native plane. These ai'ngari have held strong for many thousands of years and even retain their cranial horns that their brethren in the Material Plane have since lost. As fierce as the ai'ngari of the Material Plane are, no one questions the might of the Shadowfell hordes.

Horns

Your horns are natural melee weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you deal piercing damage equal to 1d6 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.

Surface Ai'ngari

After the ai'ngari mass exodus from the Shadowfell to the Material Plane, their immigrant hordes splintered off into two settling groups, those that settled the Underdark and those that settled the surface. The surface dwelling ai'ngari are by far the most tame in nature and tend to cooperate well with other civilizations besides their own.

Natural Athlete

You have proficiency in the Athletics skill.

Underdark Ai'ngari

Millennia ago, there was a mass exodus of ai'ngari from the Shadowfell to the Material Plane. Many of these immigrants settled land on the surface, but many instead chose to take refuge in the underdark which more closely resembled their original home. These ai'ngari have gnarly tusks rather than fangs and are much more feral than their above ground counterparts.

Aggressive

As a bonus action, you can move up to your speed toward an enemy of your choice that you can see or hear. You must end this move closer to the enemy than you started.

Savage Attacks

When you score a critical hit with a melee weapon attack, you can roll one of the weapon’s damage dice one additional time and add it to the extra damage of the critical hit.
