Homebrew Alpacataur Species Details

"I was nearly dead on Mount Labotoe when I stumbled upon that village- the folks there- bodies like centaurs but with fluff like sheep- they did all they could to keep me alive. They were the kindest people I'd ever met- they didn't care if I was a Tiefling or not. They knew I was a person, and that was enough."

-Dream Torennill, Cartographer tasked with mapping The Dark Mountains, on their first encounter with Alpacataurs.

Kind-hearted and welcoming by nature, Alpacataurs are lovely mountain-dwelling folk, always willing to share a story and a hot meal with any who visit their settlements. Unlike their equine cousins, Alpacataurs aren't as prone to roaming. They're often quite content settling in small villages across marshy or snowy mountainsides, welcoming any outsiders with outstretched arms.

Warm Hearts and Coats

Alpacataurs, or "Alpatas" as they call themselves, are long-distant descendants of the fey who, out of curiosity and a willingness to befriend others, left their Feywild homes to the Material Planes. They have the lower bodies of common Alpacas, and the upper torsos of humanoids. Their coats of wool are extremely soft, and they often make clothing out of its excess, which is considered very valuable and amazing for withstanding winter weather. Their wool often comes in whites, greys and browns, and their skin tones can vary just as much as humans can.

Herd Mentality

Alpatas are very social people and love making friends and building communities. When alone they can often become stressed, irritable or depressive. Loneliness is one of the worst feelings for an Alpata, since their communities (herds) are often so tight-knit- everybody knows everybody else, and is friendly with almost all their neighbors. This want for social connection can make Alpatas outside of their herds susceptible to peer pressure or people pleasing. Alpatas are also known for their gossiping. This chit-chat would never intentionally be meant to harm anyone, but Alpatas seem to be unable to help sharing any "juicy" information they come across. This has led to the joke of never telling an Alpata to keep a secret, since they'd definitley blab about it to the next person they meet.

Names

Alpata names are usually one to two syllables, and are usually gender-neutral. Alpatas don't have much care for gender roles, and members of communities are embraced for expressing whatever identity they are most comfortable with- comfort is the Alpatas biggest wish for themselves, and those they meet. Alpata names, to many outsiders, are often considered "childish", "simplistic" or "cute", but many Alpata names have deeper meanings than they first appear to on the surface, and often date back generations. Alpatas don't have family names, but will occasionally adopt names for their entire community to share. These Herd-Names are often words that Alpatas consider pretty, and can be directly translated into Common.
