Homebrew Ascended Tiefling Species Details

She looked at him, her dark eyes holding an unexpected warmth.

“What are you?” He asked. “By the gods, you look like a devil’s kin. But that ring around your head.”

“Ascended, is the word to describe me. I have broken the yolk of my ancestry and stand before you anew. No longer bound by the burden of all other tieflings, and I hope I may help others find this path as well. Now go, I did not mean to startle you, but know that things are changing in Elusis. Times have moved on.” She looked past the elderly man on the floor, now scampering away oblivious to the figure standing behind her. “I believe you gave him quite a fright”

Broken free from the ancient sin of their past, ascended tieflings have pushed away from their devilish heritage and found their way into the hands of the divine. Though still distrusted by many, tieflings of this race, radiate a gentle warmth that puts at ease many of the natural negative emotions surrounding those who would vilify them. Once ascended, some tieflings are fortunate enough to gain contact with an angelic herald who sees through their devilish appearance to the soul within and binds themselves together in order to give them a greater purpose and destiny.

Of Divine and Hellish Constitution

Ascended Tieflings retain many of the things that their non-ascended cousins do, they retain their human like appearance and physique their bloodline still derived from that of humans. However, many changes occur to them in the aftermath of ascension. The most common of these changes is the changing of hair and skin colours to brighter and more vibrant colours, the addition of celestial halos that often orbit the neck, middle of the head or around it, or the horns of a tiefling turning into small wings that more tightly fit the figure of the skull. Some tieflings have also gained more abstract angelic traits like an additional or multiple eyes, a celestial mark on their forehead or hands or a supranatural glow to their skin. Lastly their eye colour and composition may change, some tieflings who once had no visible pupil will develop a more natural eye composition with a pronounced pupil and a gentler colour.

Agents of Righteousness

Ascended tieflings are a much smaller minority due to their rarity and most end up as nomads and travellers as per the advice of the divine heralds. Those that stay within the confines of cities or towns, end up finding their way into the church and other similar callings attempting to help others and break many of the stereotypes surrounding their race.

Much like their non-divine cousins the ascended have no real homeland and thus make do where they can and with what they have. Those that follow the advice of their divine heralds and travel, tend to find ways to get along on their travels and are usually easy to trust and thus trust more easily themselves. Someone who truly gains the respect and trust of an ascended tiefling will have found themselves a steadfast ally and confidant.

Ascended Tieflings usually keep their original names before their ascension, though many do decide to take a new one more in-line with their new outlook on life.

Ability Score Increase

Your Charisma score increases by 1, and your Wisdom score increases by 2.

Age

Tieflings mature at the same rate as humans but live a few years longer.

Alignment

Ascended Tieflings will more than likely tend towards good alignments, but there are those that tread the lines of neutrality and evil in order to perform divine acts for the betterment of others no matter the method. 

Size

Tieflings are about the same size and build as humans. Your size is Medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Darkvision

A remnant of your infernal heritage, grants you enhanced vision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Divine Resistance

You have resistance to radiant damage.

Angelic Boons

You know the Mending cantrip. When you reach 3rd level, you can cast the Aid spell as a 2nd-level spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. When you reach 5th level, you can cast the Calm Emotions spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. Wisdom is your spellcasting ability for these spells.
