Homebrew Dragon Species Details

Pure dragons by nature, these beings walk among men in the form of humanoids, adorned with the silhouettes of horns and draconic features. Often resembling demonic beings in appearance, this race is prone to being mistaken as such by foreigners. However, within their native planes, dragons are considered a necessary, positive force.

Proud Dragon

Dragons often hold a set of horns upon their head, elven ears, and/or a tail, small wings, or some sort of draconic feature. They may also possess traits similar to their magic type, such as cracks of lava and fire from being a fire-based dragon, or in a nature-based dragon plant-like growths or green hair or skin. Unusual hair and skin colors are also equally common.

The types of magic are fire, water, cold, dark, light, nature, mechanical, earth, and air.

Possible Traits per Type

- Fire/Warm-toned skin, darkened or ash-stained hair, cracks along the skin that run with lava and fire, lungs of fire that spew ashes when the dragon coughs

-Water/Cool-toned skin, hair that appears shiny or watery, webbed hands/feet/tail, gills, smaller scales that form shark-like "skin"

-Cold/Desaturated skin, hair that often appears to be shattered or smoke-like, unnaturally cold skin, frost along limbs or body, horns that appear transparent like icicles

-Dark/Darker skin with more visible silver or gold markings, hair that is almost entirely smoke, growths that tend to resemble deep sea or cave-dwelling creatures, unnaturally glowing eyes

-Light/Lighter skin that appears to glow almost blindingly when using magic, dark void-like eyes, dark, striped markings or none at all, hair that holds a constant shine

-Nature/Skin that often takes natural colors such as green or brown, plant growths within the hair or on the body, limbs that resemble animals

-Mechanical/Often skeletal form, weak with flight, often augmented by mechanical counterparts, copper or silver-colored eyes and/or markings

-Earth/Thick armored scales like tectonic plates, heavy bones at the price of a lack of flight, faster on ground and sturdier

-Air/Near transparent skin, visible, incredibly thin bones, bodies with feathered growths or thin skeletal growths

Dark and Light Clans

Dragons often reside in a large tribe or clan, protected by a greater dragon who constructs the structure they reside in. Dark-aligned clans reside in structures that appear pitch black with inky coloring or purple-ish streaks, forming a large fungal-like structure on mountainsides and in dens. Light-aligned clans instead reside in towering structures of coral-like growths, being near-white in coloration with pastel colors.

Based on the clan type, dragons will be aligned with a particular group of magic and can ask for favors from the head dragon if they encounter a den of their type.

Dragon Traits

Your draconic heritage manifests in a variety of traits you share with other dragons.

Ability Score Increase

Your Strength score increases by 2, and your Charisma score increases by 1.

Age

Young dragons have odd growth patterns. They walk hours after hatching, attain the size and development of a 10-year-old human child by the age of 5, but only reach adulthood by 20. They live to be around 200 years old.

Alignment

Dragonborn tend to extremes, making a conscious choice for one side or the other in the cosmic war between good and evil (represented by Bahamut and Tiamat, respectively). Most dragonborn are good, but those who side with Tiamat can be terrible villains.

Size

Dragonborn are taller and heavier than humans, standing well over 6 feet tall and averaging almost 250 pounds. Your size is Medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Draconic

You have draconic ancestry. Choose one type of dragon from the Draconic Ancestry table. Your breath weapon and damage resistance are determined by the dragon type, as shown in the table.

Breath Weapon

You can use your action to exhale destructive energy. Your draconic ancestry determines the size, shape, and damage type of the exhalation. When you use your breath weapon, each creature in the area of the exhalation must make a saving throw, the type of which is determined by your draconic ancestry. The DC for this saving throw equals 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus. A creature takes 2d6 damage on a failed save, and half as much damage on a successful one. The damage increases to 3d6 at 6th level, 4d6 at 11th level, and 5d6 at 16th level. After you use your breath weapon, you can’t use it again until you complete a short or long rest.

Damage Resistance

You have resistance to the damage type associated with your draconic ancestry.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and Draconic. Draconic is thought to be one of the oldest languages and is often used in the study of magic. The language sounds harsh to most other creatures and includes numerous hard consonants and sibilants.
