Homebrew Axolotl Species Details

These axolotl humanoids are a variety of colors with their squishy exterior. The skin of an axolotl is highly permeable, allowing them to easily exchange oxygen even when underwater. However, they dry out easily and must take care to maintain their moisture levels. Their gills extend out of the sides of their heads. Their rears have tails about half as long as they are tall. These help with their ambulation in water. Their hands and feet feature short digits that are webbed.

Axolotl Traits

These traits give you the ability to survive any natural disaster you may encounter.

Ability Score Increase

Your Dexterity score increases by 3 and your Charisma score increases by 2. Your strength is reduced by 3.

Age

This race of Axolotl can live up to over five times the length of their non-magical counter part, up to 80 years, thanks to their magic imbued bodies. They reach adulthood at 10 years old.

Alignment

The Axolotl race tends to be a kind and loving race who wants to be friends with anyone who is even remotely friendly with them.

Size

The Axolotl race didn't gain any size from the magic that made them sentient so they remain Tiny sized creatures, about 7 in. to 9.5 in. tall standing upright. (Tail is about 2 - 3 in. long)

Speed

You have a base walking speed of 15 feet standing upright and a swimming speed of 30.

Crawl

If your hands are free, you can walk faster adding +10 to your movement speed BEFORE any modifiers including sprinting. This is a Free action to get down and stand back up if your hands are free.

Darkvision

Thanks to having lived in the dark waters for years, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Amphibious

You can breath air and water.

Axolotl Regeneration

Your body can naturally regenerate, although you can only regenerate small wounds in short bursts. If you have 1 or more hit point and are below half your hit point maximum, as a bonus action, you may spend up to half of your hit dice to regain hit points, similar to when you would regain hit points during a short rest. Once you use this trait, you can not use it again until you finish a short or long rest. In addition, any severed limbs you have lost will grow back within 2d4 days.

Water Dependency

If you fail to immerse yourself in water for at least 1 hour during a day, you suffer 1 level of exhaustion at the end of that day. You can recover from this exhaustion only through magic or by immersing yourself in water for at least 1 hour per exhaustion level.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and Aquan.
