Homebrew Diciden’s Kitsune Species Details
As midnight drew near, the courageous Tokutaro ventured out into the moor, which was overgrown with yew bushes through whose branches the wind was blowing. Tokutaro remained brave. It was not long before he saw a white shape dart into a thicket not far from where he stood.
“Who is there?” Tokutaro called out.
A moment later, a beautiful young woman with three tails emerged from the spot where the shape had disappeared. Tokutaro could not see the kitsune’s obvious trick.
Kitsune are humanoid foxfolk that live in the Feywild. As descendants of Inari, the ancient fox spirit, they are naturally clever and curious.
Kitsune Names
Traditional kitsune names reflect their origins in Japanese folklore. Some kitsune follow a tradition of changing their names as they grow new tails, and may even adopt names from other races after a fateful encounter or prolonged exposure. Lastly, there are kitsune who believe in the existence of “true” names, which signify a kitsune’s reflection in nature or affinity to a spiritual concept.
Male Kitsune Names: Ayaki, Jiyoki, Kyomi, Miyaro, Shinyai, Yulai
Female Kitsune Names: Chankotu, Imhakaru, Kyrsaku, Namkitu, Yanyeeku
“True” Names: Cadence, Cloud, Blossom, Spirit
PLAYFUL TRICKSTERS
The kitsune of the Feywild have earned a reputation as tricksters, with motives that lean toward playful mischief over malevolence. Stories tell of kitsune playing tricks on overly proud warriors, greedy merchants, and boastful commoners, while the crueler ones abuse poor tradesmen and farmers or devout monks.
Diciden’s Kitsune Traits
As a kitsune, you have the following racial traits.Ability Score Increases
When determining your character’s ability scores, increase one score by 2 and increase a different score by 1, or increase three different scores by 1. Follow this rule regardless of the method you use to determine the scores, such as rolling or point buy. The “Quick Build” section for your character’s class offers suggestions on which scores to increase. You can follow those suggestions or ignore them, but you can’t raise any of your scores above 20.
Age
Kitsune can live to be over 900 years old and grow up to nine tails over the course of their lifetime. Generally, a greater number of tails indicates an older and wiser kitsune.
Alignment
Kitsune are good-hearted, and even the tricksters among them are more playful than vicious.
Creature Type
You are a Humanoid.
Size
A kitsune has about the same size and build as humans. Your size is Medium.
Speed
Your walking speed is 30 feet.
Trickster’s Guile
You have proficiency in the Deception skill.
Kitsune Magic
You know the dancing lights cantrip.
Starting at 3rd level, you can cast the charm person spell with this trait. Starting at 5th level, you can also cast the invisibility spell on yourself with this trait. Once you cast charm person or invisibility with this trait, you can’t cast that spell with it again until you finish a long rest. You can also cast either of those spells using any spell slots you have of the appropriate level.
Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells when you cast them with this trait (choose when you select this race).
Fox Form
You can use your action to shapeshift between your humanoid form and your fox form. While shapeshifted, your game statistics are replaced by the statistics of a fox, but you retain your alignment, personality, and Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores. You also retain all of your skill and saving throw proficiencies, in addition to gaining those of your fox form. If your fox form has a similar proficiency and the bonus is higher, use your fox form’s bonus. Changing between forms has no effect on your hit dice or current or maximum hit points.
While in fox form, you can cast spells using Kitsune Magic without requiring any components. You can’t cast other spells, speak, or take any action that requires hands. Shapeshifting doesn’t break your concentration on a spell you’ve already cast, however, or prevent you from taking actions that are part of a spell, such as call lightning, that you’ve already cast.
You retain the benefit of any features from your class or other source and can use them if your fox form is physically capable of doing so.
You choose whether your equipment falls to the ground in your space, merges into your fox form, or is worn by it. Worn equipment functions as normal, but the DM decides whether it is practical for your fox form to wear a piece of equipment. Your equipment doesn’t change size or shape to match your fox form, and any equipment that your fox form can’t wear must either fall to the ground or merge with it. Equipment that merges with the fox form has no effect until you leave the form.
Languages
You can speak, read, and write Common and Sylvan.
