Homebrew Awakened Brown Bear Species Details

A brown bear that has been granted Intelligence through the Awaken spell.

Awakened Brown Bear Traits

Your awakened brown bear character has the following racial traits.

Ability Score Increase

Your Strength score increases by 2, and your Constitution score increases by 1.

Age

Wild bears reach physical maturity at the age of 6 and have a typical lifespan of 25 years. As part of the spell that granted you intelligence, your lifespan has extended to upwards of 50 years.

Alignment

Awakened bears tend to be uninterested in the politics of the other races, and are typically neutral. They are very loyal to their allies and those they choose to align with will have a big impact on their alignment.

Size

Brown bears stand between 4 and 5 feet tall on all fours, and between 8 and 10 feet tall when balancing on their hind legs. Females weigh between 400 and 800 pounds, and males range from 600 to 1200 pounds. Your size is Medium.

Powerful Build

You count as one size larger when determining your carrying capacity and the weight you can push, drag, or lift.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 40 feet, and you have a climbing speed of 30 feet. When attempting to walk on your hind legs, your walking speed is halved.

Ursine Body

Your creature type is beast, rather than humanoid. Additionally, your body shape makes it difficult for you to wear clothes or don traditional armor. To wear armor, you must get barding of the type you wish to use. Your paws can’t wield weapons or shields or do anything that requires manual precision, such as using tools or magic items or performing the somatic components of a spell. You have disadvantage on attack rolls using weapons not designed for bears.

Natural Armor

You have a thick, furry hide. When you aren't wearing armor, your AC is 12 + your Constitution modifier. You can use your natural armor to determine your AC if the armor you wear would leave you with a lower AC.

Claws and Bite

Your front claws and fanged maw are natural weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with these attacks, you deal slashing damage equal to 1d8 + your Strength modifier or piercing damage equal to 2d6 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.

Multiattack. Beginning at 5th level, if you do not use your movement you can make two claw attacks. If you hit with one of them, you can use your bonus action to make a bite attack.

Keen Smell

You have advantage on Wisdom (Perception), Wisdom (Survival), and Intelligence (Investigation) checks that involve smell.

Languages

You can speak and read Common, speak Bear, and can generally get a simple point across to other animals via body language and vocal noises. Your clumsy paws make writing Common nearly illegible.
