Homebrew Awakened Cat Species Details

Awakened cats all look like normal house cats. However, each Awakened Cat has a gem hidden somewhere on their furry bodies that holds their life force and keeps them from becoming a regular cat. If this gem is destroyed, they become a normal cat and lose any and all abilities they may have had when they were sentient. If this gem is reconstructed in any way, such as by the mending cantrip, the cat will regain all of the abilities it lost.

Awakened Cat Personality

An awakened cat might have motivations and quirks much different from a dwarf or an elf with a similar background. You can use the following tables to customize your character in addition to the trait, ideal, bond, and flaw from your background.

The Awakened Cat Obsession table (as the Tabaxi Obsession table) can help hone your character’s goals. For extra fun, roll a new result every few days that pass in the campaign to reflect your ever-changing curiosity.

Awakened Cat Traits

Your Awakened Cat character has the following racial traits.

Ability Score Increase

Your Dexterity score increases by 3. Your maximum Dexterity score is 22 instead of 20.

Age

Awakened cats have no longer lifespans than any normal cat, unless their lives are magically extended, and can live up to twenty years.

Alignment

Awakened Cats tend toward chaotic alignments, as they let impulse and fancy guide their decisions. They are rarely evil, with most of them driven by curiosity rather than greed or other dark impulses.

Size

Awakened cats are Small size and can grow up to twenty inches long.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 35 feet and you have a climb speed of 20 feet

Darkvision

You have a cat’s keen senses, especially in the dark. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Quadruped Frame

While not wearing armor, your Armor Class is equal to 11 + your character's Dexterity modifier. Additionally, armor costs double to be made for you, due to your unusual body shape.

Creature of Magic

An Awakened cat is a being created and sustained in part by a magic gem called a soulstone. Any effect that suppresses magic returns an Awakened cat to her former state and temporarily strips away their conscious thought. This can be averted with a successful Charisma saving throw of DC 10 + the spell slot's level used to remove the Awakened Cat's intellect. Should they leave the area of effect or its duration expires, they awaken with no memory of the time while under the antimagic’s influence. Additionally, due to the magic of the soulstone, an Awakened Cat can use Mage Hand as per the spell, with the following effects:

  • You may use this spell to perform finer functions that normally require hands, such as lifting a mug and taking a drink and writing a letter.
  • You also may use Mage Hand to wield a one-handed weapon. However, you cannot use this ability to extend the range of your weapon attack beyond five feet of your person. Additionally, an Awakened Cat cannot use any item with this ability weighing over 5 pounds + the Awakened Cat's Charisma score.

Feline Agility

Your reflexes and agility allow you to move with a burst of speed. When you move on your turn in combat, you can double your speed until the end of the turn. Once you use this trait, you can’t use it again until you move 0 feet on one of your turns.

Cat’s Talent

You have proficiency in the Perception and Stealth skills.

Feline's Grace

You have proficiency in the Acrobatics skill checks. When you would take fall damage, make an Acrobatics check. On success you take half damage.

Cat Claws

Your claws are finesse natural weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you deal slashing damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength or Dexterity modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and one other language of your choice.
