Homebrew Tyraling Species Details
A human runs through the alleyway, not knowing which way to go, to escape its pursuer. As he hits a dead end, he stops as he hears a slight chuckle behind him. He slowly turns to see his pursuer standing thirty feet back. He shrugs off his coat revealing his true form causing the human to shudder in utter fear. The being, looking the similar build of a human, but with chitin armor jutting off his shoulders and knees, with a crest on his head spiking backward. His chest has a rib cage appearance that is jutting out of the being's skin.
"What are you??" the human asks his pursuer
The being chuckles, "I am the Tyraling, and I must consume."
----A merchant story passed down as a warning of going to the marked areas during night
From the dark where the mysterious creatures recently discovered, a new race would be born. They first sighted in small packs in the Underdark, then they surfaced and began to spread and devour the lands. Some variants would infiltrate the towns and cities bite the females of other races infecting them with an unknown and currently incurable disease. This disease would lead these children that are born to those females to be doomed to become the first Tyralings.
Awakened, but hunted
These individuals are very few in number for now. But their numbers are growing as the children of the infected mothers begin to mature and evolve into the Tyraling and then continue to spread their race to the ends of the world. Some races such as the high elves and the superstitious groups of humans purge these children and attempt to wipe them out to prevent them from spreading further. Most species look at this race with extreme distrust since many soon go insane after being outcast and rejected for long periods of time. Even the rough barbarian tribes have trouble trusting them leaving hardly any place that will welcome this race. The creatures that help create them begin to call to them and slowly start to drive them insane if they cannot block them out of their minds and will then soon become the very monsters that they try to avoid becoming.
Mutated Forms
Tyraling’s body is similar to what their body was before their transformation with new features that had grown out of their body. The body of this race has a large layer of chitin surrounding their body as a protection system. It begins with the crest at the top of their head extending back. There is an external rib cage jutting out from the Tyraling's chest protecting the internal organs. There are some tubes that are coming in and out various parts of the body that sometimes are retracted to prevent damage to it. Also some variants have additional chitin armor that forms on other parts of the body providing more protection. There are few variants of this species that adapt to their surroundings and the entire race is able to withstand any kind of environment. The color of the chitin and their skin depends on the color of the original creature that infected them. It can range from any variety of colors with the most common version being purple with a mixture of red. Their eyes are fully solid much like a Tiefling’s eyes are sometimes confusing people and causing them to mix the two races.
The Great Devourer
The creatures that began the Tyraling race were once demons and resided in the Abyss along with their master, the God of Devouring, Tyra. He was once a powerful Abyssal Lord with his own layer of the Abyss of eternal hunger and slaughter, but was cast out after multiple abyssal lords swarmed the lands, forcing him to flee. He was severally weakened after losing his lands and source of food. He found refuge in the mysterious Astral Plane where he carved out his own home among the endless sea of thought. His arrival doomed the remaining peace that existed in the Astral Plane. Many travelers and inhabitants of these lands would be consumed by Tyra's minions fueling his strength. Soon he unleashed his minions to the material plane, consuming many lands and inhabitants. Tyra now seeks to control the Material Plane and turn it into a land of endless devouring and slaughter.
His home according to the brave travelers who had actually managed to see it and return alive reported that the land was red with corpses of the inhabitants of the Astral Plane and even the minions of Tyra. His beasts continue to endless tear at the corpses and speak in a language more align with the snarl of a beast. The travelers would constantly hear the call of a greater beast, soon to be discovered as Tyra, or the Great Devourer as they called it. Further expeditions to the Devourer's home have been prohibited until there is a way to destroy it or banish it back to where it came from.
Eternal Hunger
All Tyraling’s have a constant insatiable hunger. This hunger can never truly be satisfied, even by magical means, however though this means they can eat literally anything organic as their stomach can digest any nutrients, even bones can be devoured by a really hungry Tyraling. This hunger, and the constant voice in their head from the creature that caused their transformation causes many to go insane and join with their darker heritage.
Outcast among society
A Tyraling's appearance make them seem to be very dangerous and untrustworthy. However, those who do trust one a Tyraling often find themselves with a good companion, as they will ally with those who does show some trust to them. However, more than one story has shown that using or betraying a Tyraling will often leave the betrayer to have no remains to be found except for some pieces leaving a warning for others that might think to betray a Tyraling.
Tyraling Names
A Tyraling usually bears the name that the mother gave them based upon her race. However, some Tyralings will forsake those names in favor of their own Tyraling name. These names are usually mysterious to even other Tyralings. They often symbolize either some trait they show, or combine the name of the Tyra swarm names with their original name.
Male Names: Ravenger, Leviarathier, Wayword
Female Names: Tervimoth, Kraklaven, Naga
Evolutionary Species
The Tyraling race has a unique trait that is held only by a few other races, the ability to evolve and strengthen themselves. There are five known evolution paths, the Armored Shell, the Ravenous Form, The Mind Eater, The Shrike Variant, and the Infused Elemental. Armored Shell Tyralings tend to have their chitin armor bonded entirely around their body along with the extensions of other parts of the armor around their body which in turns greatly increases their height. Ravenous Form Tyralings tend to have the least amount of chitin armor showing allowing them to blend in much more easily with society despite their even worsened hunger. The Mind Eaters Tyralings seem to have developed more of a crest on their heads protecting them some while they summon the powers of the Great Devourer. The Shrikes seem to have much lighter and smaller chitin armor as two gaps appear in their back where they spout wings. This makes it harder for them to merge with society as their wings are very easily noticed. The Infused Elemental Tyralings are very rare and unique as the would appear closely to a normal non-evolved Tyraling, but their elemental part shows through their chitin armor slightly. Molten variants have a soft glow emanating from their bodies. Venom variants have a slow leak of their venomous blood coming from their armor making it dangers for creatures that attempt to bite them. Thunder variants seem to have a quiet sound of a rumbling coming from their bodies.
Tyraling Traits
Tyralings are able to see in the dark as easy as day and are able to adapt to stop further incoming damage. They also have their own form of armor and are able to further increase their natural abilities by evolving.Ability Score Increase
+1 to Intelligence and +1 to another ability score
Alignment
Tyralings do not like to feel controlled so many are chaotic. There are some who stay within society and follow the rules to avoid attracting attention to themselves. Then ones that start to go insane become evil and fall under control of the Hive Mind similar to how an elder brain controls the mind flayers while most are neutral, as they tend to keep to themselves, while there are some exceptions that do have a good side and wish to help others.
Age
Tyraling’s live much longer than some races and much longer than humans thanks to their Tyraling heritage. Tyraling’s usually start showing their Tyraling heritage around 18 to 20 years of age. Sometimes it happens early depending on the race. Tyraling’s that come from human mothers live around 200 – 350. Tyralings that come from elven mothers tend to live to the same age period of the elves. Other races tend to vary but the most common age is between 200 – 350 years of age
Languages
These beings have their own language called Tyraling which is shared with the creatures of Tyra. This language is a mixture of speaking with the sounds of a beast. It is a very difficult language to understand and the Tyralings are able to use this to communicate with each other and keep messages hidden from others. They almost always know common and often know one additional language allowing them to communicate with some of the races that the individual grew up with.
Size
Tyraling’s size is Medium and they usually ranger in height of 5 and half feet to 6 feet. Depending on their evolution type, they can also range up to 7 feet and even higher. The weight varies depending on the race of the mother and their evolution path.
Insatiable Hunger
Tyraling’s stomach and lungs are able to withstand the strongest poisons. Tyraling’s have poison resistance and have advantage on rolls for saves against poison by magical and non-magical means. Also, after a fight, the Tyraling can choose to feast if the enemy was a living or undead creature and had flesh which then restores 2d6+Tyraling level health. However, Tyraling’s hunger happens much quicker than normal beings do and suffers 1 level of exhaustion from hunger if they have not eaten within half a day.
Superior Darkvision
Being used to all kinds of terrain, Tyralings and the creatures who helped create them all are able to see in the dark. Tyralings have 120ft of Darkvision and able to distinguish color in the dark but, targets that are further out are blurrier than targets that are closer.
Chitin Armor
Since their very skin contains chitin with some larger parts of chitin armor forming out of the Tyraling’s body, they have a natural set of defenses against some attacks. Light armor does nothing for Tyralings but Tyralings have a base armor value of 12 + Constitution modifier when having no armor or only light armor equipped. You may still use a shield and gain this benefit. A monk’s or barbarian’s unarmored defense will override this if it has higher AC
Natural Instincts
Tyralings have the instincts of their Tyra heritage and thus know how to survive in the wild. Tyralings have proficiency in Survival.
Survival Adaptation
Tyralings are able to adapt to incoming damage almost instantly. After taking slashing, puncturing, or bludgeoning damage by a weapon you may use your reaction to reduce the damage by 1d6 which is later upgraded to 2d6 at level 5. This may be used once per long rest.
At level 7, you can either further increase the survival adaptation to 3d6 and then 4d6 at level 11, or you may take a racial feat instead for your evolution path
Evolution
Tyralings begin their evolutionary stage once they begin to fully mature and the evolution type depends on their life style and environment. Once you reach level 3 you may choose one evolution path out of 5 (You will have to come back once you reach level 3 to the race option and choose your evolution path.)
Armored Shell
Tyralings that usually are constantly in combat and take a lot of hits usually evolve their armor to increase protection. Usually males will go down this path as they often seek to protect the ones they love. However, this also makes them very aggressive to many non-Tyralings and often they will charge into the fray without thinking or caring of what they are up against.
Add +1 to Strength
Your chitin armor increases in size and melds together forming a strengthen shell around your chest. Your base armor value is increased to 14 + Constitution modifier while your movement speed is decreased by 5. You can no longer gain the benefits of non-magical armor as your shell takes up much space and already provides the armor needed. You also upgrade the Survival Adaptation dice from a d6 to a d8. (If you are a barbarian or monk class, if unarmored defense is higher, then use that AC value.) Shields may still be used to add AC
Ravenous Form
Tyralings that evolve down this path are usually quick and very savage when attacking. Females will often go down this route which makes it so much easier for them to seduce their prey and draw them in for the slaughter. This form is very quick thinking and able to dodge the enemy’s attacks and then strike for the killing blow.
+1 to Dexterity
You now can take half damage 1 time per long rest for any attack. Your speed now increases by 5. Your Survival Adaptation dice now adds an additional d6. But if you suffer any levels of exhaustion from hunger, then you must roll a Wisdom save (DC=15), on fail you begin to try and attack whoever is closest to you. If you fail, then reroll the save each turn until you pass or knocked out or lose your level of exhaustion. And if you suffer further levels of exhaustion from hunger, then you have disadvantage on the roll.
Mind Eater
Tyralings that go down this route usually seek knowledge. Many of these do not care for anything else except to fill the desire for knowledge. This also makes them the most dangerous of the variants as they can plan out strategies and counter enemy’s movements and even destroy the minds of the target before striking them down. Some have even been known to become the hive minds of the race and bring forth creatures out of their plane into the material.
+1 to Intelligence.
You now have advantage against any telepathic or psychic means of influence on your character (Example: Command or Suggestion). Your Survival Adaptation Dice can be used to reduce any kind of damage. You also gain two different spells unique to the Tyraling Race that has yet to been mastered by other races. However, if you use insatiable hunger trait you only gain half the health recovered. (Note: If you are a non-spell casting class, then your spell casting modifier is your Intelligence)

Warp Blast
3rd level Evocation
1 action
Casting time: Instantaneous
Range: 60 feet
Components: S
You cast your hand out as you draw power of the Hive Mind to launch a pink bolt of psychic energy at the target. Make a spell attack roll and on hit, an explosion of a 5ft radius occurs around the target and does 2d10 + your Intelligence Modifier psychic damage to all targets in the area affected. On miss the bolt fizzles out and nothing further happens
Warp Lance
6th level Evocation
1 action
Casting time: Instantaneous or up to 2 rounds of concentration before firing
Range: 300 feet
Components: S
You bring your hand to the side of your head as you draw power from the Hive Mind into a concentrated focus. Then as you cast a beam of pink light shoots out towards the target.
This is a single target spell attack that can be charged before firing.
Shot without charging: Does 8d8+Spell casting modifier
Each extra round the spell is charged, add another d8 to damage. However, when rolling to hit, a 1 will critically fail and you will take 4d6 psychic damage as a synaptic backlash occurs. For each extra round charged though the number of critically failing increase from 1-2, then 1-3. You may only charge for 2 rounds before it has to be cast. Additionally, though, if you roll a critical hit, you deal and extra d20 damage to the target and the target must make a Constitution save against your spell save modifier or be stunned for d4/2 rounds.
Shrike Varaint
Tyralings that take this evolution path are usually seeking adventure or determined to find food somewhere. This path starts by being able to leap great distances then eventually sprouting wings and able to take flight.
+ 1 to Dexterity
You grow a full set of wings and are now able to fly certain distances. You now have a flying speed of 40. You can now reroll any 1’s that you roll on your survival adaptation dice, but you must take the new roll. Your chitin armor is now 11 + your Dexterity however as it has become much lighter.
Infused Elemental
Very few Tyralings have adapted and become one with the environment they live around. Those that live in new the molten volcanoes have become infused with fire and those that live in the poisonous areas of the world have become a venomous form themselves while those who live in the land of thunder and storms have fused with the constant sound of the thunder and channel it into their strikes.
+1 to Constitution
Molten: You live in very hot environments, usually near open flames half the time. You have fire resistance. Also, when being hit by fire you are automatically able to apply your survival adaptivity to it. However, when fighting in water, you subtract 3 on Dexterity and Strength saves and checks.
Venom: You come from the poisonous swamps in the world. Your very body when wounded leaks poison dangerous to even the most poison resistant creatures. Upon taking melee damage, you may cause a sudden surge of your venomous blood to spew from the wound and onto the target inflicting much searing pain. They take d4 + your Constitution modifier venom damage. This has 3 uses per long rest. You also now gain poison immunity and cannot take damage from another Venom Tyraling’s venom damage. However, you cannot be healed by healing potions (Venom damage ignores poison resistance)
Thunder: You have been around the dangerous areas of storms. You can channel the inner thunder inside you to unleash it at a sudden fist strike. You may make a strike at those around you causing any enemy within 10 feet to make a Strength save. (DC=8+proficiency+Constiution) On fail the enemy is knocked back 15 feet and take 2d4 thunder damage. On save, the enemy takes only half damage. However, you only have 2 uses per long rest and you have disadvantage on perception checks for hearing.
Tyraling Speed
You have the speed of most races. Your walking speed is 30 feet
