Homebrew Batfolk Species Details

Living among the coniferous treetops and caves of Floriot's megapeninsula and darkening its evening skies as thousands take flight are the noble batfolk. Appearing as large humanoid bats, their mighty wings make them among the most well-adapted to Floriot's unpredictable rotations, allowing them to travel across land and sea by night. Batfolk's nimbleness and ability to use echolocation to scout ahead also make them skilled adventurers, particularly excelling as Rangers and Rogues.

Batfolk culture is striated by family lineage, with different family groups varying drastically in appearance and behavior. The Flying Foxes are the largest batfolk and are a clan of warriors and sages. The reclusive Vampire Bats are avoided by most and are known to feast on the blood and flesh of man and beast alike. The Hog-Noses are the smallest batfolk and live in great numbers in the vast cave systems of the megapeninsula.

Batfolk Traits

As a batfolk, you have certain traits in common with your people, including the ability to fly and use echolocation.

Ability Score Increase

Your Dexterity score increases by 2, and your Wisdom score increases by 1.

Age

Batfolk reach maturity by age 15 and live long lives, often in excess of 100 years.

Echolocation

Batfolk use echolocation to navigate in the dark, hunt, and scout ahead. Echolocation allows batfolk to sense all objects and creatures within 100 ft of them, even in total darkness or if they do not have line of site. This allows batfolk to see around, but not through, objects. For example, it can be used to determine what is around a corner or in an adjacent room if doors are open but not if a closed door blocks the way. Echolocation is unaffected by magical darkness but is disabled by the spell Silence and any other effects that cause creatures to be deafened.

Alignment

Batfolk of any alignment can be commonly found. Vampiric batfolk tend to be evil while others are generally neutral or good.

Size

Batfolk range from about 5 feet tall to over 6 feet. They have thin, lightweight bodies that weigh between 90 and 120 pounds. Your size is Medium.

Speed

Your base walking and climbing speed is 20 feet.

Flight

You have a flying speed of 35 feet. To use this speed, you can’t be wearing medium or heavy armor.

Sun Sensitivity

While in direct sunlight, batfolk have disadvantage on attack rolls, as well as on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight (though their echolocation is unaffected).

Claws

Your claws are natural weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you deal slashing damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and Batfolk.
