Homebrew Yuan-ti Malison Species Details

This only covers those with a humanoid upper body and snake-like lower body. This one was specifically inspired by the Magic the Gathering card Yuan-ti Malison from Adventures in the Forgotten Realms. This is an update to another homebrew version that was published in 2018 with some modifications made for flavor.

Yuan-ti Malison Traits

Your yuan-ti Malison (type 3) character — called a Malison for short — has the following racial traits.

Ability Score Increase

Your Charisma score increases by 2, and your Intelligence score increases by 1.

Age

Malisons, having combined their serpentine and humanoid nature, mature at a slower rate than humans and have lifespans and can typically live 200-300 years.

Alignment

Yuan-ti are devoid of emotion and see others as tools to manipulate. They care little for law or chaos and are typically neutral evil.

Size

Malisons are generally larger than normal humanoid races because of their serpentine portions. However, a majority of that size is limited to keeping the humanoid upper-half off the ground. They "stand" roughly 6 to 7 feet tall with a nose-to-tail length of typically double that. Your size is Medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet, and you have a swimming speed of 30 feet.

Darkvision

You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Innate Spellcasting

You know the poison spray cantrip. You can cast animal friendship an unlimited number of times with this trait, but you can target only snakes with it. Starting at 3rd level, you can also cast suggestion with this trait. Once you cast it, you can’t do so again until you finish a long rest. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells.

Hold Breath

You can hold your breath for up to 15 minutes at a time.

Magic Resistance

You have advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Poison Immunity

You are immune to poison damage and the poisoned condition.

Coil

When you grapple a target you instead coil around them with your serpentine bottom half. You may use an bonus action to squeeze the grappled target for 1d8 + Strength Modifier bludgeoning damage. Each turn the target remains grappled you may squeeze harder dealing damage plus an additional 1d6 damage per turn the target does not break the grapple (to a maximum of 6d6). Your movement speed is reduced to zero while you are grappling in this manner.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common, Abyssal, and Draconic.
