Homebrew Beholden Species Details

Originating from the foul, twisted dreams of a Beholder, the beholden are a people sworn to the preservation of knowledge, no matter the consequences behind such a goal. However rare it is to see a beholden in person, it is almost guaranteed that their reputation of being retentive of knowledge and excellent keepers of secrets will often make them a worthwhile companion or a memorable encounter.

Beholden Traits

As a beholden, you gain the following benefits:

Age

Beholden are born in two ways: either a manifestation of a beholder dreaming about a humanoid creature, or between the partnership of a humanoid creature and a beholden. Beholden mature at age 17 and, more often than not, live up until 120 years old.

Ability Score Increase

Your Constitution score increases by 2, and your Intelligence score increases by 1.

Size

Beholden can stand at a range of heights. Most of them have been sighted as being a minimum of 4 feet tall and a maximum of 8 feet tall. Your size is medium.

Flight

You have a natural flying speed of 20 feet. You cannot use this if you are wearing medium or heavy armor.

Cycloptic Awareness

Due to your singular, large eye, you have excellent visual sight. You have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks.

Eye Rays

Possessing the ranged capabilities of a beholder, a beholden can utilise this to a lesser extent. As an action, you can make one of your eye stalks shoot a 30 ft long ray. The targeted creature must succeed a Dexterity saving throw or suffer the effect of the ray. The effect of the ray will be randomly decided by rolling on the Aberrancy table:

1d6 Ray Effect
1 The targeted creature has their movement speed reduced by 10 feet.
2 The targeted creature heals for 1d12 hit points.
3 The targeted creature suffers 1d10 force damage.
4 The targeted creature is freed from any conditions it may be suffering from. If this effect is not applicable, you may reroll.
5 The targeted creature is stunned until the start of their next turn.
6 The targeted creature gains 1d12 temporary hit points.
