Homebrew Dragon Species Details

Dragons are high and mighty creatures, feared by many. They have been known to cause trouble in small towns, stealing sheep, hoarding gold, killing villagers and many other horrible atrocities. That is just a small handful of dragons though, as most dragons live regal, noble lives in castles or mountains.

Appearance

Dragons are large and towering beings, with long necks and sturdy armoured bodies. Almost all dragons have sharp, rock like scales, but some dragons have small fine scales like a snakes or even quills. It all depends on where their bloodline comes from, for example, most dragons hail from mountains and rocky areas with stalactites and stalagmites, go they have scales resembling their environment. They come in many magnificent colours, but yet again it depends on their family tree, they can range from copper-green to a magnificent fiery red.

Castle life

Dragons live in societies very similar to us, with kings and queens, warriors, princes and princesses. There are no peasants or workers though, the lowest possible rank is a cook or a cleaner, who usually have more than one job. The entire kingdom exists in a single, gargantuan castle which usually reside in hidden areas like in mountains, large trees or even partially submerged. Dragons are very complex and intelligent folks, being able to forge weapons, write literature and theory, create art, and enchant and medal with magic.

Heirs

Young dragons who were heir to the throne had to go through multiple challenges before being crowned as ruler. Instead of being chosen by age, it would be the last dragon standing. The first challenge would be balance and patience, each heir would balance on a long beam and would have to attempt to joust one another off with a dull spear. The second challenge would be a race. The third challenge would be who could breath their elemental breath the longest. And the last challenge would be a fight to the death. So much pressure is put onto these young dragons that they usually develop strained relationships with their clutch mates, or run away before the challenges start.
