Homebrew Soulbound Species Details

Soulbound are spirits tied to an object, typically a gemstone of some kind that is fashioned into a ring, necklace, or circlet. They use their ethereal forms to inhabit the bodies of recently deceased, restoring them to life as if they had never died. Some use this for cruel purposes, stealing identities for their own gain, others benevolently, keeping bodies from degrading and increasing the chance of a resurrection. Regardless of their intentions, Soulbound must keep the object they are tied to close, or they will lose control of the body.

Soulbound Traits

Soulbounds abilities depend on the body they inhabit, but they have a few standard traits across any given body.

Ability Score Increase

One of your ability scores increases by 1, and a different Ability Score increases by 2.

Age

Soulbound do not age normally, and last as long as the object they are tied to exists.

Alignment

Soulbound tend toward no particular alignment. The few that exist tend towards extreme alignments, although particularly long-lived Soulbound grow increasingly neutral.

Size

Soulbound vary widely in height and build, depending on the body they inhabit. They inhabit both Small and Medium Humanoids.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet. Any speeds gained from a body you inhabit match your walking speed.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and one extra language of your choice. Spellbound typically know one of the languages of the first body they inhabited knew, or one from the body they inhabited for the longest amount of time.

Bound Existence

Your existence is bound to a small object you chose when you create this character, such as a ring, circlet, necklace or something similar. It provides the energy for your body, repairing and keeping it alive. When you wear or carry it you cannot be separated from it unwillingly, and if it is moved more than 30ft from your current body you return to your Ethereal form and the connection with your current body is severed.

Ethereal Form

As an action your soul can enter the Ethereal plane, and your body becomes unconscious and remains on the Material plane. You can see onto the material plane, but cannot affect or be affected by anything in this form. Lastly, you are not visible creatures on the material plane,  unless they can see into the ethereal plane, and you cannot move more than 30ft from your Bounded Object.

Possession

While within 5ft of a corpse, you can use your action to transfer your soul into it, repairing and restoring it to the best of your ability. The corpse must be a humanoids body that is less than 10 days old, and if it is missing any limbs they remain missing. Otherwise, it serves as your new body, appearing identical to the individual it is from before they died. You gain any movement speeds they had in life, as well as any special senses. Because your energy comes from your Bound Object, you do not regain any hit points, level of exhaustion or abilities from the transfer, but you retain any of the attunements the previous body had.

If you are not possessing a body, you are forced into your spirit form, and your Bounded Object functions as your body, but is unable to take any actions or move.

If the body you are inhabiting dies, your Bound Object attempts to restore it to life and drains itself of energy. While it is drained in this way, your soul looses the connection to the item, and you depart for the afterlife. Your Bounded object can be targeted by Resurrection magic to revive you, following the normal rules for resurrection.

Reanimated Nature

Due to living off of the energy from your Bound Object, your reanimated body gain the following benefits:

  • You have advantage on saving throws against disease and being poisoned, and you have resistance to poison damage.
  • You have advantage on death saving throws.
  • You don’t need to eat, drink, or breathe.
  • You don’t need to sleep, and magic can’t put you to sleep. You can finish a long rest in 4 hours if you spend those hours in an inactive, motionless state, during which you retain consciousness.

Knowledge from a past life

YYou retain some knowledge from the body you possess. When you make an ability check that uses a skill, you can roll a d6 immediately after seeing the number on the d20 and add the number on the d6 to the check. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
