Homebrew Awoken Toy Species Details
“I will protect my child. I am sworn to the service of my child. My child trusts me to keep the terrors of the dark away from her, and that is what I will do. Staying vigilant, remaining steadfast, and making sure that things that belong under beds or in closets are aware of their place. My child doesn't need to bother herself with the goings on of bedroom warfare, for that is my job and my job only.
"I will protect my child."
—Theo the Teddy Bear, Ravenloft
Like any awoken object, the awoken toy is filling a strange place in a world not necessarily built for it. They're built for comfort and companionship, but also made to withstand anything children can throw at them. This might make them unique in that they can be the best protectors for children afraid of things that go bump in the night, or perhaps stalwart companions for childhoods of a less comfortable caliber. Whatever it is, awoken toys stick to their intended purposes stronger than stitches.
Made to Love
Awoken toys are toys first. Many are soft fabric and stuffing, while some are tin and wood. As such, they don't have any natural defenses to the harsh exposure of the world. Toys who don't already have faces typically gain one in an appropriate face upon being awakened, but not always. Beyond these common elements of toy design, the precise materials and build of a toy vary based on the purpose for which it was designed.
Although they were manufactured, awoken toys are living beings. Resting, healing magic, and the Medicine skill all provide the same benefits to awoken toys that they do to other living beings.
Awoken Toy Personality
Many awoken toys spend the majority of their existences starting off as children's playthings. Whatever reason they were awakened for, many awoken toys don't lose hold of that love that was put into them for so many years beforehand. Most awoken toys are created for a very specific purpose, but many still struggle both to find a place outside of that purpose, and to relate to the creatures who created them.
The typical awoken toy shows a very fierce pursuit of purpose, and that can translate into a harsh energy. That being said, toys being objects of desire and affection to begin with, they can also be very emotional beings with deep senses of interpersonal connection. Awoken toys usually show dedication to their creators, and this can sometimes resemble a spiritual devotion to their creator or charge.
The typical awoken toys have sexless body shapes. Some awoken toys ignore the concept of gender entirely, while others adopt a gender identity. The majority of awoken toys go by whatever it is they were perceived to be before becoming awakened, but others change their identities to whatever they wish it to be.
Awoken Toy Names
Most awoken toys were assigned names by their charge or creator. As independent individuals, some have chosen new names as a way to express their path in life. A few take on human names, often the name of a fallen friend or mentor.

Posted Nov 9, 2021This is just a proof of concept for a friend’s homebrew campaign. Eventually I’ll work on ironing it out with better versions, but if you’re interested in playing a version of this (or giving helpful suggestions) feel free.
