Homebrew Whistler Species Details
A Whistler is a mysterious creature that found its origins after the Spellplague, coming with the return of Mystra and any other time of mass magic instability . They are beings formed entirely from the essence of the Weave: they are created when a area has such a massive influx of power that it becomes unstable, and the magic instead coalesces, creating a Whistler and restoring the magical balance. They are however quite rare in the base plane, as it takes such a large quantity of magical power for such an anomaly to be created. They are more common in the Feywild, as the magic there is more unstable.
A Whistler is a short creature, their height averaging at 4', but have ben documented as ranging from 3 to 7 feet. Their appearance varies based on where they originated, but have quite a few common characteristics. Their color is always a dull, almost void black, whether they have fur, scales, or any other skin. They have a "double knee" of sorts, with a leg structure similar to a satyr, except with three talons on their feet. They are next to always wearing a mask. The reason for this is, similar to the true name of a demon, is that their face is their identity. To know the appearance of a Whistler's face is to know its essence, its true self, and thus hold power over them. Hence the reason for their mask. The only facial feature that appears on their face is their eyes, and the number and placement can vary by any amount. Other than the eyes, the face is filled with colorful, almost tribal markings. Due to them not needing to eat as they are purely magical creatures, they do not have a mouth on their face, but rather have a giant maw that runs the length of their chest that opens into a pocket dimension that resembles the area in which they were created. Due to their lack of vocal chords, they rather have holes on their hands and fingers that they combine with a form of sign language to play melodies to communicate. This is where the name whistler comes from. Their language is a direct derivative of common, and as such they can understand common, but often choose to ignore those that speak to them. They additionally have a thin tail with some sort of weapon on the end of it. Some of their appearance and their first mask is based on where they originate (e.g. a forest Whistler may have a bark mask with fur and antlers, and a tail with a spike for piercing damage). Upon their death, much like a ring of mind shielding, their essence transfers into their mask, creating a legendary Whistler Mask. The mask also takes the markings of their face.
As a creature, Whistlers are natural nomads, with their innate attunement to the weave allowing them to travel between planes, though they mostly decide to stay in the Feywild, where they are quite rare but more common than in the Prime. They are curious and inquisitive, but like to keep to themselves, not making contact with civilization very often. Due to their rarity and the manner of their origin, they are often seen as a sort of black cat, or omen.

The features that are influenced by origin are your skin (scales, fur, etc.), tail weapon, horns, and any other feature deemed important to origin location. For example, a Whistler originating in a forest may have antlers, fur, a bladed tail and green facial features. However, this is all largely based on the creator's discretion. For example, though it may be more common for the horns to be antlers if originated in a forest, but can be anything the creator chooses, if they please. They could even be ears. Again, see the full character description for features that stay consistent.
