Homebrew Blinker Species Details

Scattered about the world, many adventurers can recount tales of giant brutish beasts they've bested in combat. One-eyed monstrosities, destroying all in their path and chowing down on whatever was unlucky enough to get in its way. This, of course, would be the mighty cyclops. You are a blinker, descended from these giant beings. Some follow the path of the cyclops, others may be ashamed of their lineage. How your character feels about your ancestry is up to you.

Singular Sight

A Blinker, being descended from a cyclops, takes on the most notable trait of the giant. Blinkers only have one large eye in the center of their head. Otherwise, depending on the rest of their lineage, they remain fully humanoid.

Blinkers are incredibly rare, and the shock of seeing a humanoid with one eye may make some people uneasy. Because they're so rare, it's unlikely that a blinker is raised among others like themself, and are often subjected to ridicule from their peers on account of their appearance.

Standing Alone

Blinkers lack a specific homeland, they are spread randomly throughout the world. In some cases, a family might not even know they possess the genes of a cyclops, and their child will be born with the blinker traits. Because of this, some blinkers are even cast out of their homes, having to learn how to fend for themselves in any given situation. In a lot of situations, blinkers wind up growing up on the streets.

Cyclops tend to have disdain for blinkers as well. They may have the eye of a cyclops, but they will never be able to exhibit the brute force and power that a cyclops wields. Blinkers who attempt to connect with their ancestry have rarely been successful. Some feats of strength might impress a cyclops enough, but in most cases, they're either cast out or splattered into oblivion

Blinker Names

Blinkers may have names from multiple sources. If a blinker has a tiefling mother and a blinker father, they could be named based on the tiefling names list, or the blinker names list.

In other situations, blinkers may be given nicknames that are either for fun or derogatory. Many blinkers are inclined to power through the hate, and some decide to try to reclaim the nickname they've been given.

Blinker names are quite similar to names of giants, as they're close relatives to the cyclops.

Birth Names: Anke, Disrard, Gesten, Gruktam, Hurkurn, Kanmaur, Magrava, Miske, Niathri, Ralra, Uzem, Vimrola, Zozten

Blinker Traits

Blinkers share a number of traits in common with each other.

Ability Score Increase

When determining your ability scores, you increase one of those scores by 2 and increase a different score by 1, or you increase three different scores by 1. You follow this rule regardless of the method you use to determine the scores, such as rolling or point buy.

Your class’s “Quick Build” section offers suggestions on which scores to increase. You’re free to follow those suggestions or to ignore them. Whichever scores you decide to increase, none of the scores can be raised above 20.

However, most blinkers take on the martial prowess of their ancestry, making their Strength score increase by 2, and their Constitution score increase by 1.

Age

Blinkers mature at the same rate as humans but live longer. A blinker's average lifespan is about 160 years.

This might change based on the blinker's ancestry. If they happen to be part elf, they might take on that longer lifespan. This is up for discussion between you and your GM.

Alignment

A blinker's life of ridicule can often lead them to chaos. Most blinkers tend to be chaotic neutral, though some that take after their cyclops ancestors might lean more on the evil side.

Size

Blinkers have a wide range of the absolute smallest being 5 feet, and the absolute tallest being 8 feet. They range between 110 and 340 pounds. A lot of their size depends on their parents. If they have a halfling parent, they'll likely be on the much shorter side, but if both parents are blinkers, they'll likely be on the taller side.
Your size is Medium

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

By Design

Due to your body being built for fighting, you have proficiency in the Athletics skill.
You also have advantage on Intimidation skill checks against creatures that can see you.

Poor Depth Perception

You have disadvantage on attack rolls made against a creature further than 30 feet away.

Darkvision

Your singular eye isn't only a downfall, it's a strength as well! You have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Stomping Grounds

As long as you are familiar with the location you are in, (ex. a tavern you've stayed in, a city you've lived in, a forest you've traveled) you can shift your focus to anything out of the ordinary.

For one, you have advantage on Investigation checks in locations you're familiar with. You also have a +2 bonus to your initiative rolls.

If you venture outside of this area, you lose these bonuses.

Familiarity Rules:
For each new location you venture to, you can make an Investigation check once every 24 hours. This means you can try once inside a city for the day, but you could try to investigate a tavern inside that city, which would refresh on a separate cycle. Whether the Investigation check succeeds or not is based on the Familiarity table below.

When using the Familiarity table, where a location not listed would fit best is at the discretion of the GM. For individual buildings, the bonus only applies to rooms you've seen already. (In a dungeon, it might be best to classify each room as its own "building")

Before making the skill check, you must have spent an amount of time in the location equal to 1 minute multiplied by the DC of the check.

 Familiarity Table:

Skill DC Location Type

5

Open Road, Well-Marked Path

7

Forested Road, Small Buildings

10

Small Village, Medium Buildings

15

Medium Town, Large Building

20

Large City, Giant Temples / Castles

Using the character builder, you can switch between "Familiar" and "Unfamiliar" to apply the bonuses to your character sheet, depending on your location.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and Giant.
