Homebrew Animalkin (Kemonomimi) Species Details

Animal Kin, also known as Kemonomimi, are humanoids with animal features and traits. You may have been an animal that was turned into a human by magic, a human that was cursed to resemble a beast, or a creature born from the Feywild, not unlike a Satyr or Centaur.

 

Animalkin (Kemonomimi) Traits

As an Animal Kin you have the following racial features:

Beast Form

When you choose this race you must pick one beast of cr 1/4 or lower to be that of your beast form. Your humanoid form may have remnants of your chosen beast such as ears, feathers, or whiskers. These changes are purely cosmetic.

As an action, you can shift into your Beast form and use the statblock for your chosen beast. Your HP maximum and current hit points remain unchanged during this transformation. While in beast form you cannot talk or cast spells with the exception of Animal Friendship and Commune with Nature. 

Ability Score Increase

Your Wisdom score increases by 2, and your Dexterity or Constitution score increase by 1.

Age

Animal Kin are quick to mature both physically and emotionally, reaching young adulthood at age 10. They rarely live to be more than 70 years old.

Alignment

Animal Kin tend toward neutrality, being more focused on survival than concepts of good and evil. A love of personal freedom can drive shifters toward chaotic alignments.

Keen Hearing and Smell.

Keen Hearing and Smell. The Animal Kin has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on hearing or smell.

Size

Your size is Medium. To set your height and weight randomly, start with rolling a size modifier:

Size modifier = 3d6

Height = 4 feet + your size modifier in inches

Weight in pounds = 90 + (2d4 × your size modifier)

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Darkvision

You have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and Sylvan.

You can cast animal friendship an unlimited number of times with this trait, but you can target only Beasts that share your Beast Form with it. Starting at 3rd level, you can also cast commune with nature as a ritual only. Both of these spells can be cast while in Beast Form.
