Homebrew Artiodon Species Details

The humanoid Hippopotamus' called Artiodons are battle ready giants of the Maguuma Jungle.  Often forming small communities of 10-20 individuals around varies bodies of water they have a strong sense of pride and loyalty to their homeland and communities. If provoked or angered, an mistake that often takes little  to no effort Artiodons are true terrors—baring their large tusks and a tremendous war-cry that can be heard for miles. Their ferocious physicality,  short temper, fierce loyalty, and outright stubbornness can be there strongest assets as well as their biggest shortfalls. Their short-tempers are offset my their natural inclination for laziness often content to sit in bodies of water for upwards to 8 hours a day. 

Artiodons tower above most other humanoids, averaging between 7 and 9 feet tall. They have the head large wide mouths with thick sharp tusks, short ears that wobble to display thier moods and faces—of Hippos, and hulking bipedal bodies covered by ,thick smooth leathery skin. Each of their hands has five thick digits, and their feet are the flat-bottomed, oval-shaped feet of Hippotamus attached to short stubbly legs

Like that of an Hippot,  Artiodons have a strong love of water being able to move as quickly in water as on land. they have an innate ability to hold their breath underwater longer than most other humaniods their size.

Crafty Ingenuity 

Artiodons are as crafty as they are content to lounge, able to craft many useful items and shelters using the natural resources of their environment. Thier gift of ingenuity and craftyness can make them an excellent part of a team especially when it comes time to set camp given enough motivation. sometimes all they need for motiviation is the thought of a cool shady hut to lounge in.

Familiar Loyatly/ General Aloofness

Artiodons believe in the value of community and life and for some never leave the communities they were born and raised in. They develop a strong bond to thier community and the immediate family similiar to imprinting

outside of their communities Artiodons find the concept of loyalty beyond them. tending to stray more to selfishness and general allofness which only compounds into driving potential friends and companions away

 

Artiodon Names

An Artiodon's name includes subtle tones, produced in the large throat of the Artiodon  most non-loxodons cathes produce these sounds, Artiodons often translate them into titles, such as Hierarch, Revered, Grandmother, Healer, or Saint, when interacting with other races.

Dormant rage

Once per short rest if you drop below 25% health (rounded up) you go into a rage gaining gaining damage resistance to all damage types besides force. Gain advantage on strength saves and checks. And a 1 d4 bonus on attack and damage rolls involving strength. Rage lasts for 1 minute or reduced to zero hitpoints or incapacitated.

Ability Score Increase

Your Strength score increases by 2, and your Constitution score increases by 1.

Age

Artiodons physically mature at the same rate as humans, but they live about 315 years. They aren't considered adults until they are marked with the signs and marks of battle.

Natural Armor

You have thick, smooth leathery skin. When you aren’t wearing armor, your AC is 12 + your Constitution modifier. You can use your natural armor to determine your AC if the armor you wear would leave you with a lower AC. A shield’s benefits apply as normal while you use your natural armor.
