Homebrew Arachinoid Species Details

"This one survived the process," the drow wizard said flatly. Alchemical devices, and reagents were laid out about the room, pages of tedious notes, calculations, and equations lay strewn on a table with bloody surgical instruments, and strange ingredients. "Though, it doesn't seem to remember anything."

Arachinoids are the culmination of years of cruel Drow experimentation. The means by which they are produced involves a long torturous process of alchemy, transmutation magic, and surgery that leaves the subject with only the faintest memory of their prior life, and a monstrous form resembling an amalgam of a humanoid, and spider. Those souls unfortunate enough to survive this grim process are left with only memories of the unimaginable pain, and torment of the process by which they were "born."

Monstrous Form

With their leathery carapace, sharp fangs, multiple eyes and appendages, arachinoids are often met with revulsion by races unfamiliar with aberrant and monstrous races. They stand on two legs, and vary in size, color, and appearance. Some stand as tall as 7 feet, with others being just under 5 feet tall. They tend to be slender, weighing between 100 to 250 pounds depending on their height.

Arachinoid coloration and patterns vary about as much as that of actual spiders with brown, and black being most common, with shades of yellow, white, and gray being less common. Some have "hairs" all over their body, while others are sleek. Many have hair on top of their head, with shades of brown, white, and black being most predominant.

Age

It is difficult to determine the maximum age to which an arachinoid can live, as most of them tend to die in service to the drow, or end up hunted as monsters. It is assumed their lifespan would be comparable to that of a human.

Arachinoid Names

It is uncommon for arachinoids to have proper names, and they are generally labeled numerically, or given a title according to their job, or any combination of both. A common name could be "Servant 136." This serves to remind the arachinoid that they are slaves, and property of their masters, though they might be given names among one another according to their personality, or other defining traits such as Daggermouth, Redline, or Jumper.

Due to the nature of their creation, they are physically agendered, but may take on a gendered personality. A trait believed to be left over from their life before their transformation.

Arachinoid Traits

Your arachinoid character has several abilities unique to spiders, and spiderlike creatures.

Carapace

Your carapace provides natural armor, making it easier for you to avoid harm. While you aren’t wearing armor, your carapace gives you a base Armor Class of 13 + your Dexterity modifier.

Spider Climb

You can move up, down, and across vertical surfaces and upside down along ceilings, while leaving your hands free. You have a climbing speed equal to your walking speed. However, you cannot move this way on a slippery surface, such as one covered by ice or oil.

Venomous Bite

You can use your action to make a bite attack. This attack is an unarmed attack that deals piercing damage, and can replace a regular unarmed attack.

When you attack in this way, you can choose to use your venom, and the creature must make a saving throw. The DC for this saving throw equals 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus. A creature takes 2d6 poison damage on a failed save, zero damage on a successful one. Additionally, if the creature fails the save by 5 or more, it falls unconscious for 10 minutes. This damage increases to 3d6 at 6th level, 4d6 at 11th level, and 5d6 at 16th level. After you use your venom, you can’t use it again until you complete a short or long rest.

Web Runner

While in contact with a web, you know the exact location of any other creature in contact with the same web. You also ignore movement restrictions caused by webbing.

Ability Score Increase

Your Dexterity score increases by 2, and your Constitution score increases by 1.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and one language of your choice representing the language you spoke before your transformation.

Age

It is unknown how long arachinoids live, but it is believed their lifespan is comparable to that of a human.

Alignment

Arachinoids have a deep understanding of pain and suffering, and tend to the extremes when it comes to alignment. Their suffering can make them very compassionate, or very selfish. Very few arachinoids are neutral.

Size

Arachinoids stand between 5 and 7 feet tall and average 175 pounds. Your size is medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet. Your climbing speed is 30 feet.
