Homebrew Sylph Species Details

“They say there was a time when the Sylvanwood was just another forest. Back before the oldest Elves alive today were born. One day the forest was just ...different. Lights dance at the edge of the forest, the trees whisper to each other. The babbling brook actually babbles and the undergrowth itself seems to move without a breeze. Maybe it’s just superstition, but I find it best to leave the forest alone when the forest starts talking back."

—Cassandra Tallamor, The Truth in Tall Tales

Mostly found in the great forest they call the Sylvanwood, the Sylphs keep mostly to themselves. On the rare occasion that they do venture beyond the branches of their home, they are almost always mistaken for familiars and other such tiny creatures due to their fey-like appearance and size. So rare is it to see one far from the forest that the few who've even heard of them tend to think of them as stories. This had led to countless tales of supernatural stories centered on the Sylvenwood.

Phyiscally small, these Fey creatures resemble multicolored Elves, possible distant cousins in ages past, with a wide variety of elementally consistant traits. Each Sylph is born with an innate attunement towards a specific element. Sylphs stand between 12-18 inches (30-46cm) tall, and weigh between 1.5-3lbs (0.68-1.36kg). They are typically lithe, with long, slender ears similar to elvan folk, and colorful, nearly solid colored eyes. Considered adults after their first decade Sylphs mature quickly and take their place where the community needs them, working together against the very large dangers inherent in the very large world. Sylphs can live between 200-300 years depending on their affinities, that is if something bigger doesn't make a meal of them first.

Survival of the smallest means everyone works together. The isolated nature of their home, and the relative size of the looming dangers around them, have led to the Sylphs banding together as a community to work towards this common goal. As such, they tend not to allow arbitrary divisions to come between them. Men, women, fire, earth, or obsidian, Sylphs consider each other as family. Whether they'll extend that loyalty to their nonsylvan party mates depends entirely on the Sylph.
