Homebrew Brakaii Species Details

Living in elaborate cities of sandstone, Brakaii are desert dwellers capable of incredible feats of physical and mental strength. Brakaii are open and welcoming to outsiders, offering anyone who doesn't pose an immediate threat housing and food at low prices.

Desert Dwellers

The Brakaii have rough skin adapted to the dry climate, rocky cliffsides, and sandstorms. Their skin is typically darker in color, ranging from clay red to brown to black. Brakaii also have bones protruding from their bodies at points, such as their elbows, shoulder blades, and their faces/heads. Brakaii have four arms, leading them to be expert climbers. Their extra arms benefit them greatly in their daily life, and they incorporate them into many of their dances, which are usually slow and deliberate, with every movement having meaning and telling a story. Brakaii also make very capable sailors, able to steer and mess with the sails at the same time. Using their extensive knowledge of shipfaring, the Brakaii have recently developed a kind of "sand ship" that is made with the purpose of traversing the sand dunes. It is essentially shaped like a normal ship, but without sails and instead they have large tracks that are turned using wheels that the Brakaii turn from inside the ship. The Brakaii who do this for a living are called sand sailors.

Welcoming-and-Proud Society

Brakaii are a proud people. They live in cities on the dunes, cliffsides, and harbors. Brakaii welcome outsiders that don't cause trouble, though they are not very tolerant of criminals and have been known to banish repeat offenders, they see it as a more favorable option than execution for most cases.

Brakaii are thought to be capable of anything they set their minds to, with enough determination. This is both the cause and the effect of them being a very proud people. Every Brakaiin citizen must prove itself to be a valuable member of society, but this can be in any way that someone can benefit a population as a whole. Whether they prove themselves as a fighter, artist, spellcaster, performer, or other such talent, they must follow that general career path if they want to become citizens of Brakaii society. Regardless of race or birthplace, the proving "ritual" must be completed by everyone. If someone proves themselves and earns citizenship through playing the lute, that must be their job unless they undergo another proving using a different skill. A bard might want to settle down as a stonecutter, but they must prove that they are capable of cutting stone before they can. Once someone goes through multiple provings, they can move freely under that profession, so many Brakaiin citizens end up taking the proving a couple of times, so that they have the freedom to do multiple things. Due to this process being very extensive, the Brakaii have developed complex ways of keeping track of their "proved" citizens, having developed an entire second language made with the express purpose of keeping track of individuals and their proven professions. Being male or female means little to this society, and physical appearance often comes second to their skills.

Brakaii Names

Brakaii often have shorter names, with only very accomplished members of society earning a second name. Second names are usually neutral names, but may be gender-specific as well. Males names typically have an "a" as their middle letter, females often have "e", and gender-neutral names don't have as much thought out in that regard. Most of the names use letters like A, E, J, K, L, and R, with some acceptations.
