Homebrew Avier Species Details

Avier are humans with long birdlike legs, and large fans of tailfeathers, as well as some feathers growing from their arms and heads. There is great variety in the appearance of their feathers, but they tend to be rather colorful. They are slender in build, with bones less dense than other races. Their plume of tailfeathers is more so used like that of a peacock, meant to astonish enemies, or even attract mates. Avier cannot fly, but their feathers do allow them to glide, giving them a tendency to inhabit places of height.

Avier Traits

As an Avier, you have certain traits in common with your people.

Ability Score Increase

Your Charisma score increases by 2, but your Strength score decreases by 1.

Age

Avier mature and age at about the same rate as humans.

Size

Same as humans, your size is medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Majestic Plume

As a reaction, you can suddenly burst open your fan of tail feathers to attempt to astonish a creature within 10 ft. It must succeed a Wisdom saving throw of 9 + your Charisma modifier or be stunned for one round or until it is attacked. This doesn’t work on creatures that cannot be charmed or frightened, or cannot see you. You cannot use this reaction again until your feathers are refurled, which takes two rounds. It will not work on the same creature twice. Outside of combat, using your plume of feathers may give you advantage on Charisma skill checks in certain situations.

Some Flight Feathers

You can glide instead of falling, and have a glide speed of 30 ft. A glide speed assumes that the creature falls by 10 feet every turn, and must move their full glide speed movement. The creature can choose to dive by converting horizontal movement into downward movement. You will not take damage when you land unless you were diving at the time of landing. If you are falling by surprise (i.e., slipping off a cliff or being yeeted by a monster), you must make a Dexterity saving throw of 9+ to take control of your fall and glide.

Talons

You have large talons on your feet and claws on your hands, which give you a climbing speed of 20 feet. In addition, your talons are natural weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you deal slashing damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and Sylvian
