Homebrew Aasimar/Halfling Species Details

His small wings stretched just beyond his shoulders and blocked the view of the little girl at his back. He pulled his focus from underneath his shirt and glowed with pure, radiant light. The devils' in front of him screeched in pain and terror. Through it all he stood, a steadfast shield of light in front of the darkness. When it was over, his wings disappeared, and he kneeled in front of the crying human child. From his pocket, he pulled a chocolate chip cookie and handed it to her. The child, sniffles subsiding, held the cookie in her hands with reverence. She stared with wide eyes at the halfling in front of her. 'They're gone now, and it will all be okay. We'll get you home to your family soon and you will be okay. I promise.' That, that was how we knew Garry Prancingfeet would do everything in his power to bring us all home.

Typically, Aasimar bear within their souls the light of the heavens. They are descended from humans with a touch of the power of Mount Celestia, the divine realm of many lawful good deities. Aasimar are born to serve as champions of the gods, their births hailed as blessed events. They are a people of otherworldly visages, with luminous features that reveal their celestial heritage. This is not so when they are part halfling. Halflings, known for their down-to-earth sensibilities and simple pleasures, bring a much needed level of normalilty to the aasimar personality. Halfling/Aasimars tend to be concerned with bringing the light of their god to those who are in need of it. While many aasimars are awe-inspiring and many times jaw dropping in their power,  when mixed with halflings, they bring a certain sincere and heartfelt kindness and compassion to that awesome celestial power.

Celestial Champions

Like normal aasimarians, halfling blooded aasimarians are placed in the world to serve as guardians of law and good. Their patrons expect them to strike at evil, lead by example, and further the cause of justice.

From an early age, a halfling blooded aasimar receives visions and guidance from celestial entities via dreams. These dreams help shape them, granting a sense of destiny and a desire for righteousness.

Each aasimar can count a specific celestial agent of the gods as a guide. This entity is typically a deva, an angel who acts as a messenger to the mortal world. However, because they are also part halfling, aasimarian halflings have been known wander outside the realm of devas for their guides.

Hidden Wanderers

Full-blooded aasimarians are strident foes of evil and typically prefer to keep a low profile. Halfling-blooded aasimarians tend to navigate this with ease. The halfling ability to blend into crowds and make their home anywhere lend themselves well to the aasimarian desire to stay under the radar. Their wings tend to only reveal themselves under times of great distress, and while they look virtually indistinguishable from full-blooded halflings, there is a certain light hidden in their eyes and gleam to their comforting grins.

When traveling, aasimarian halflings rely on their affable nature and unassuming stature to hide in plain sight. Their simple clothing and friendly smile puts people at ease while their size keeps them from attracting unwanted attention.  While generally friendly and compassionate, halfling-blooded aasimarians have no compunction about striking openly at evil, particularly for the protection of others. For them, comfort and civility is never worth endangering the innocent.

Aasimar Guides

An aasimarian halfling, except for one who has turned to evil, has a link to an angelic being. That being—usually a deva—provides guidance to the aasimarian halfling though this connection functions only in dreams. As such, the guidance is not a direct command or a simple spoken word. Instead, the aasimarian halfling receives visions, prophecies, and feelings.

The angelic being is far from omniscient. Its guidance is based on its understanding of the tenets of law and good, and it might have insight into combating especially powerful evils that it knows about.

As part of fleshing out an aasimarian halfling character, consider the nature of that character’s angelic guide. The Angelic Guide tables offer names and natures that you can use to flesh out your character’s guide. If, however, there is a different deity that a player wants to use that works better with the halfling background, use that. Or if there are different guides or natures that work better for the player's character, go with that.

Conflicted Souls

However, not everything for the halfling-blooded aasimar is peachy. There is a war raging within each halfling-blooded aasimar. At their core, halflings are about peace, food, hearth, and home, and each one's definition and idea of that is different. When these desires and values are paired with the duties, responsibilities, and calling of the celestial touched and guided aasimar, there is undoubtedly conflict. At all times, halfling-blooded aasimarians are drawn to their simple comforts of their home, whether that's an overstuffed armchair in front of a fireplace or singing jauntily in a bar with friends, and their innate calling and desire to travel beyond their comfort levels to protect and defend. It is a struggle for halfling-blooded aasimarians to choose their simple pleasures or their unending duty to protect the celestial light.

Well-adjusted halfling-blooded aasimarians walk the balance and navigate their desire for comfort and their responsibility to strike at evil wherever it may be. Unadjusted halfling-blooded aasimarians tend to one side or the other, either refusing to leave the comfort of what they know for the battlefield or refusing to take a moment to breathe and be "in the moment." While there is a noble strength in the halfling-blooded aasimarian who refuses to leave the battlefield there is a wiser strength in the halfling-blooded aasimar who knows when they need a moment of rest or comfort between battles.

Halfling-blooded aasimarians who get burnt out on the battlefield tend to lose sight of the hearth, heading toward a darker path where their world is broken into only right and wrong, good and evil. Their over-zealous protection and defense of the law can be grating on those who travel with them and their affable nature and easy comfort with others fades. A battle ravaged heart in a halfling-blooded aasimarian is a dangerous and sad thing. Their smile loses its warmth and skin loses its glow, they forget how to laugh and play.

Conversely, halfling-blooded aasimarians who avoid the fight against evil to stay where they are comfortable start to lose their celestial light. Their visions and dreams become more terrifying and it causes them deep unrest. There have been stories of halfling-blooded aasimarians who begin to have hallucinations and waking nightmares because of their refusal to follow the guidance of their celestial being. Avoid the fight against evil enough, and the guiding angel will abandon them completely. Halfling-blooded aasimarians who have been abandoned by their guide lose that spark in them and they are unable to find true peace and comfort. Their favorite food turns to ash in their mouths, their comfiest chair loses all comfort, and their home turns cold and dark.

Even well-adjusted halfling-blooded aasimarians sometimes feel torn between two worlds. The angels that guide them see the world from a distant perch. A halfling-blooded aasimarian who wishes to stop and smell the roses, or who needs a night to sit by the fire and tell stories with friends might be told by an angelic guide to push forward on a greater quest. To a distant angel, everything comforting and soothing can be done tomorrow, or the day after. There are endless days during which a halfling-blooded aasimarian can read a book in front of a fire. For many angelic guides, the self is far less important than the aasimarian duty to fight evil. An aasimar’s guide is wise but not infallible and a truly strong halfling-blooded aasimarian knows that they are just as important as the world.
