Homebrew Vessel (Inspired by Hollow Knight) Species Details

*NOTE: Heavily inspired by Hollow Knight, created by Team Cherry. I highly recommend that you play it, it is super fun! Also, I'm very bad at balancing things, so this is probably very OP. If you want, you can change certain things to balance it. I tried to not just copy everything from Hollow Knight and make my own thing, so yeah.*

The Vessels were created by the King of Darknest as a way to contain the ravenous Infection that was plaguing his kingdom. They only had one purpose: Contain the Infection. The King of Darknest mass-produced the vessels using a shell and a shade. Shades are composed of Void energy, a substance found in the deepest parts of the Void. Little is known about Void energy, only that it can manifest itself as a living organism and can take shape to interact with the world. The Infection could only manifest and take control of a being if it could dream and have emotion. If an organism could not have emotion, the Infection would be trapped inside of the organism for eternity. This was the objective of the Vessels. Thousands were produced, but only one was chosen. The defects were tossed back into the Void, and locked outside of the kingdom.

Decades later, one is awakened...

Vessel (Inspired by Hollow Knight) Traits

Vessels have the following traits:

Ability Score Increase

Vessels are small and swift, and have extensive knowledge of spellcasting. Your intelligence increase by 2, and Dexterity increases by 1.

Darkvision

Being stuck in the Void for so long, your eyes got used to the darkness. You have a Darkvision of 60 Feet. Dim light looks like bright light, and darkness looks like dim light.

You can spend 5 soul points to increase the distance to 80 Feet for 30 minutes.

Voidwing Cloak / Void Dash

Starting at level 1, you have the ability to dash up to 15 feet as a bonus action.

Starting at level 11, your Voidwing Cloak turns into a Void Dash. You can dash through walls that are 5 or less feet thick. Your shell dematerializes and is absorbed by the Shade, and appears on the other side of the wall.

You can spend 10 Soul to dash an extra 5 feet at level 1. If you are at level 11, you can spend the same amount of Soul to dash through 10 foot thick walls instead.

Angry Spirit / Void Spirit

Starting at level 3, you can manifest a small part of your Shade and launch it at an enemy. You launch a part of your Shade at a target. If it hits, it deals 1d10 force damage.

Starting at level 12, you can manifest a larger and more powerful part of your Shade. The size of the projectile increases, allowing you to hit up to 3 targets that are within 5 feet of each other. The projectile deals 3d10 force damage if it hits.

The attack costs 10 soul to use, regardless of level.

Spirit Wraiths / Void Wraiths

Starting at level 5, your Shade releases an extremely loud scream that launches volatile amounts of Void upwards. If the attack hits, it deals 2d8 force damage.

Starting at level 15, the volatile Void energy becomes more dangerous. The attack deals 4d8 force damage if it hits.

This attack costs 20 Soul to use, regardless of level.

Dark Dive / Void Dive

At level 2, you can dive downwards rapidly to deal damage. You deal 1d10 force damage in a 5 foot radius.

At level 11, you can dive downwards rapidly, channeling Void energy. You deal 2d10 force damage in a 10 foot radius.

Only the Void Dive requires soul, since it uses Void Energy. If you do not have enough Soul, you can use Dark Dive instead.

Void Claw

Starting at level 7, you are able to sharpen your Void to claw your way into stone in order to climb. You can climb up to 30 feet.

Focus Soul

You can focus Soul to repair your shell. Starting at level 1, you can spend 20 Soul to regain 1d20 (or 12) HP.

Soul

You can sap the battle energy from your opponents using Void energy. You gain Soul equal to half of the damage you do with a melee attack. You can use soul in the following ways:

  • Use abilities (like Void Dive and Void Spirit)
  • Enhance abilities (like enhancing your Darkvision)

Volatile Shade

When your HP reaches 0, your shell breaks, and your Shade is released. As a Shade, you cannot take damage of any type. You have 5 chances to restore your shell, beginning on your next turn and ending on your 5th turn since your HP reached zero. If you get a kill during the 5 turns, you absorb all of the dead target's Soul energy and create a new shell out of soul. If you cannot get a kill in the 5 turns, your Shade becomes too unstable, and dematerializes from existence. Your vessel character is now permanently dead.

While in Shade form, you cannot wield melee weapons. Your only ways of attacking are the following attacks:

  • Angry Spirit / Void Spirit
  • Dark Dive / Void Dive
  • Spirit Wraiths / Void Wraiths

As a Shade, you are pure Void energy. You have infinite Soul while in this form.

Void Speech

You can use the Void to insert your thoughts into others. You can speak telepathically to any creature within 20 feet of you.
