Homebrew Wolloxodon (Subrace of Loxodon) Species Details

Wolloxodon

The humanoid elephants called wolloxodons are often oases of calm in the harsh frigid cold of northern Yagni. The span the the frozen wastes of both Nazcaa and Bellicosia. They are massive, woolly ancient relatives of Loxodons.

Fur Giants

They typically stand between 7 to 9 feet tall, with thick, shaggy pelts. Records show extinct Wolloxodon grew to nearly twenty-five feet in height, but that era has since passed a long time ago. Unlike their plains-dwelling cousins, they have reduced ears to better acclimate to extreme cold weather. Their hands consist of a rather large palm with four short, stubby digits plus a thumb. Their feet consist of four nails, are round in shape, and have thick padding on their bottoms that cushion their steps - this padding can also detect low-pitched frequencies and allows the Wolloxodon to communicate via Infrasound, which sits just below the human range of hearing.

Silent Societies

Wolloxodon live in tribal units called herds, lead by a female leader, or matriarch, which is typically the oldest and wisest female in the group. Herds commonly number between ten and twenty individuals but it is not uncommon to see gatherings of hundreds of Wolloxodon the spring thaw. Their society is based on nomadic Clanhood: settling in place to place for some period of time, and then migrating to another one.  Too an outsider a meeting of tribes would seem particularly quiet,  but their ability to communicate through tremorsense allows them to keep a low profile in the frigid tundra.

Wolloxodon Names

A Wolloxodon’s name includes subtle tones, produced in a Wolloxodon’s resonant nasal chambers, that indicate status, family connection, and community role. Since most non-loxodons can’t distinguish these underlying tones, let alone produce them, loxodons often translate them into titles, such as Hierarch, Revered, Grandmother, Healer, or Saint, when interacting with other races.

Wolloxodons physically mature at the same rate as humans, but they live about 450 years. They highly value the weight of wisdom and experience and are considered young until they reach the age of 60.

Alignment

Most wolloxodons are lawful, believing in the value of a peaceful, ordered life. They also tend toward good.

Wolloxodons stand between 7 and 9 feet tall. Their massive bodies weigh between 300 and 400 pounds. Your size is Medium.

You can grasp things with your trunk, and you can use it as a snorkel. It has a reach of 5 feet, and it can lift a number of pounds equal to five times your Strength score. You can use it to do the following simple tasks: lift, drop, hold, push, or pull an object or a creature; open or close a door or a container; grapple someone; or make an unarmed strike. Your DM might allow other simple tasks to be added to that list of options.

Your trunk can’t wield weapons or shields or do anything that requires manual precision, such as using tools or magic items or performing the somatic components of a spell.

Loxo Call

Thanks to the padding on the souls of your feet you can communicate through infrasound, much like elephants. This enables them to speak to other Wolloxodons though tremorsense.

You have a tremorsense of a radius of 15 feet as long as you are touching the ground. Tremorsense can't be used to detect flying or incorporeal creatures.

You can speak, read, and write Common and Loxodon.
