Homebrew Chiroptera Species Details

Within the caves and dark forests of the world lie the small civilizations of the Chiroptera.

Standing between 2-4 feet, these bat humanoids are covered in thick fur. This fur can be various shades of brown, gray, and black. The most promiment feature of the Chiroptera is their long ears used for detecting sound. These ears can make up for almost half their size sometimes!

These bat-humanoids stay secluded from the world, preferring to stay in their towns and other settlements bordering the Underdark. They are curious and friendly creatures who love newcomers, so long as the visitors are respectful and friendly as well. The few that go out into the world return with wistful tales and new traditions that the Chiroptera tribes will also adopt.

Wall Climbers

Chiroptera love to climb, both for fun and for sport. They consider it a rite of passage to be able to climb the cave walls or trees of their homes. Because of their climbing, Chiroptera are known for being able to sneak up on others from a high vantage point.

Appreciation for Others

Because they are a naturally curious race, Chiroptera are very welcoming to strangers. This can make them naive and easy to manipulate, but it is also beneficial for those who need refuge from the monsters in the dark. Chiroptera also love to hear about other cultures, and some tribes and families will even integrate the traditions of other races if they find them interesting. The result is these odd traditions that mix the Chiroptera's nature-appreciating culture with the traditions of other races.

Small Yet Sweet

Your size is Small or Medium. This helps them squeeze into small spaces, such as crawlspaces in caverns or holes in trees. Outsiders may see them as cute and friendly. This is the truth but they can also be fierce fighters.

Bordering the Underdark

Chiroptera often see those who enter and leave the Underdark. Although they do not have the best relations with the Underdark, they are not seen as odd if they wander into the territory. Those escaping from the Underdark will often seek out Chiroptera for safety because of their reputation for being naturally friendly.
