Homebrew Cyborg Species Details
Coming from the Sky, cyborgs have lived a life of feeling lesser than those around them. Either born missing a limb, or having lost one sometime in their life, the lost body parts are replaced with mechanical versions.
A cyborg's appearance can vary; they look mostly like their original race, with the exception of the mechanical limbs. The replaced limbs are the main variation between cyborgs: one might just be missing a finger, whereas another might have had multiple limbs replaced.
A cyborg does not gain any of the bonuses of their original race.
Cyborg Traits
Cyborgs may come from many different species- but to keep things simple, they will have their own languages and ability improvements, as well as their own abilities.Ability Score Increase
Your mechanical limbs allow you to lift heavier things than you normally would be able to. Add a +2 to the Strength modifier.
Cyborgs, being curious, experiment, train, and explore. Add a +1 to any other ability score.
Mechanical Add-ons
You may choose up to two of the following features:
- You have a small box built into your arm/leg/another body part. The replaced part should have dimensions of 12 x 5 x 5 inches or greater. The box is 8 x 3 x 3 inches on the inside, and anything that is stored in the box counts toward the total weight you carry.
- You gain proficiency in Tinkers' Tools. Additionally, you can spend a short rest repairing yourself; this regains 1d6 hit points. You can only have this feature if you choose the proficiency option under Mechanical Add-ons.
- You have numerous attachments that you can add to your hands, arms, or legs (depending on what is mechanical). These can include knives or daggers, eating utensils, or a cup. You can have up to three, but you can only have one attached at a time. Each attachment weighs one pound, and it takes thirty seconds to put it on or take it off. Additionally, all of them must fit within a 5 x 3 x 3 space, and those dimensions must be the maximum.
Languages
Cyborgs are not common enough (and have not existed long enough) for them to have their own language. Instead, they speak Common, though most also decide to learn to speak another.
Proficiency
You gain proficiency in one type of artisan's tools.
Metal Armor
Your mechanical parts are stronger than skin; they have a resistance to slashing and piercing damage.
Disadvantages and Vulnerabilities
Being part machine, the metal, gears, and other moving parts are quiet, though they can be loud if people listen. You have a disadvantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks where the enemy has better hearing than you.
You have a vulnerability to bludgeoning damage; metal does dent. (You only have the vulnerability on your mechanical parts, not your whole body)
Additionally, if a spell that is able to restore lost limbs is cast upon you, you cease to be a cyborg. Your character reverts to its original race.
Tinkerer
You are able to create any Tiny or Small item (size by D&D creature standards), as long as you have proficiency in Tinker's tools (and the tools themselves), all the necessary supplies, and two hours to work. If you have made the item at least twice before, the time to make it is halved.
