Homebrew Chocolate Species Details
Long ago, Candyland was a wild, untamed world of vibrant foodstuff landscapes with many candy creatures of various kinds. The influence of this heritage can still be felt throughout the land today, especially in Chocolates, who carry the inherent power of Candyland in their blood.
Stories of Ancient Candyland often focus on the unimaginable beauty of the vast Gumdrop Mountains, immense Peppermint Forest, and the endless boiling caramel sea. Inhospitable but hauntingly beautiful, the elements of Candyland made it a dangerous place for many beings, but not Chocolates. They adapt well to all environments, and experience much over the course of their long lifetimes.
Chocolates have ties to the ancient elements of Candyland, which can make them powerful but keep them from fitting in among modern candy people. Some Chocolate children are born of two chocolate parents, while others can have chocolate genes that lie dormant in their ancestors for generations.
Occasionally, Chocolates can result from exposure to phenomena or places that still hold Candyland's elemental power, such as a natural disaster like a Lava Cake eruption or a Moonpie planar convergence. These forces of nature saturate any creatures in the area and might alter their nature enough that their offspring are born as Chocolates.
Filled with Candy Power
Born of Candyland's ancient power, the Chocolates walk proudly through a world that greets them with fearful incomprehension. They resemble humans and cookies but have luscious skin in dark shades of brown, and there is something odd about them. The elemental blood flowing through their veins manifests differently in each Chocolate, usually as magical power.
Those of Nougat or Cocoa descent tend to be heavier, while those of Wafer or Caramel tend to be lighter. A given Chocolate might have some features reminiscent of the mortal parent (the height and soft features of a Pastry, the thick hair of a Cookie, the small, hard features of a Hard Candy, exceedingly large stature from a Half-Taffy, and so on).
Some Chocolates live as outcasts, driven into exile for their unsettling appearance and strange magic, or assuming leadership of savage humanoids and dangerous cults in untamed corners of Candyland. Others gain positions of great influence as advisors and teachers of magic.
Each Their Own
Chocolates rarely lack confidence, seeing themselves as equal to any challenge in their path. This certainty might manifest as graceful self-assurance in one chocolate but arrogance in another. Such confidence can sometimes blind Chocolates to risk, and their great plans often get them and others into trouble. Too much failure can chip away at even a Chocolate’s sense of self, so they constantly push themselves to improve, honing their talents and perfecting their craft.
Instead of worship or clan loyalty, Chocolates make their race proud by striving to better the world through prowess in talent, battle, or scholarship. Each has their own passion, but all feel the pressure to improve Candyland as part of its elemental history.
Eternal Power, Eternal Memory
Chocolates can live to be more than 500 years old, so the oldest living chocolates often remember a very different world. This longevity grants them a perspective on the world that shorter-lived races such as humans and Cookies lack.
Chocolates are enduring like the power that flows through them, weathering the passage of centuries with stoic endurance and little change. They respect the traditions of other races, but find many younger beings' customs silly and lighthearted compared to their ancient wisdom.
CHOCOLATE BACKGROUNDS
Each Chocolate subrace has its own temperament, which might make some backgrounds more suitable than others.
Nougat Chocolates are proud of their heritage, sometimes to the point of haughtiness. They can be flamboyant, and are keen to have an audience. They rarely stay in one place for long, always looking for a new adventure. Nougat Chocolates favor open lands such as the Lollipop Plains and Ice Cream Mountains. Fitting backgrounds include charlatan, entertainer, and folk hero.
Cocoa Chocolates are more withdrawn, and their connection to the cocoa earth of Candyland keeps them from being comfortable in large cities like the Candy Keep. Their extraordinary size and strength makes them natural athletes, though, and with their stoic demeanor, they can encourage others and become great leaders. Many Cocoa Chocolates live underground or roam the Honey Bun Hills or lay claim to old ruins in the Gumdrop Mountains. Appropriate backgrounds include hermit, soldier, and acolyte.
Wafer Chocolates often get themselves into difficulty with their stubborn tempers. Like their Nougat Chocolate counterparts, they sometimes flaunt their perceived superiority over common folk. But they also want others to share their high opinion of themselves, so they constantly seek to enhance their reputations through intimidation or respect. This is easiest to do in big cities like the Coconut Coast or the Candy Keep, though Wafer Chocolates can also be found lording over small communities of other races in remote parts of Candyland. Likely backgrounds for a Wafer Chocolate include criminal, noble, and sage.
Caramel Chocolates almost all have some experience aboard or around sea vessels and many can be found within the Royal Fleet in the Milkshake Sea or on pirate crews in the Gummy Shark Shoals. They make excellent mariners and fishers. Most Caramel Chocolates prefer quiet and solitude like their Cocoa Chocolate counterparts, making their homes on wide shores or lonely cliffsides. Some, however, have the adventurous spirit of Candyland within them and seek adventure on the high seas. They go where they want, do what they want, and rarely feel bound to anything. Good backgrounds for Caramel Chocolates include pirate, sailor, and outlander.
Chocolate Names
Chocolates use the naming conventions of the people among whom they were raised. They might later assume distinctive names to capture their heritage as Candyland's natural inhabitants, such as Milky Way, Butterfinger, Crunch, or Almond Joy.
