Homebrew Anime Protagonist Species Details

Your birth may have been taken as an auspicious sign, the coming of a hero prophesied, or it may have been of note only to your parents. In any case your progenitors are no longer in this world, and you take to it alone, mastering all of it's hardships through time and occasional bad-ass flashback montages, or epic revelations of your true strength. There are many ways for a hero to gain power as you have, be they uncovered artifacts, god-given magic offered as a bonus to your patron's apologetic reincarnation, or perhaps absolute conviction in this you stand for, or beside. All these lead to a single conclusion, your wish will be made incarnate, your strength of spirit indomitable.

The anime protagonist is a special breed, of which exists usually only one at any given time, though low budget tie-in crossovers remain possible. They are especially resilient to mental attacks and have a familiarity with failure, one way or the other, that allows them to overcome the worst of situations and rebuilt a success from their direst moments. When others would give in, and death would take hold, the anime protagonist endures, for a final chance to go all out, just this once. Though some say they are cursed, with death often cloaking them, some are blessed by incredible fortune for the company and virtue that ultimately surrounds them, in either case one must stay with them to find out, lest they stir the wrath of the non-shonen hero variants....

Sometimes an anime protagonist is taken from their own world and deposited elsewhere, in which case they develop their powers as the result of a benevolent deity offering aid in apology for their plight, or perhaps face malli from vengeful deities craving respect, and appreciation.

Standout individual...

Anime protagonists inherit unusual and often quite recessive traits. In Human protagonists, for example, their hair often naturely moves to an unusual position reflects their standup personality. In others the eyes present heterochromia, albinism, or other uncommon traits for that species, examples in other races include Tiefling heros with pupils and uneven numbers of horns, or a split tail.

Seen in silhouette, a protagonist usually appears unassuming, and can pass for ordinary, rendering their unusual features totally non-descerning in a casual environment. This can be done as a free action based on convenience.

Anime protagonists never have access to both parents, and rarely if at all have even one. This comes as a consequence of the boons or malli that led them down the heroic path. This often results in ingrained and buried memories of long forgotten inspiring instances with them, saved in the hero's heart.

Some Anime protagonists are betrayed early in their quest, instilling an urge for revenge, and to heal from what was done to them. In others this scarring proves too deep, pushing them down a path of violence and the ruthless pursuit for personal gain, as those did that harmed them.

Wild and Confident

Anime protagonists rarely lack confidence, seeing themselves as equal to almost any challenge in their path. This certainty might manifest as graceful self-assurance in one or expectation of treatment as ordinary despite their power in another. Such self- confidence can sometimes blind Protagonists to risk, and their great plans often get them and others into trouble.

Some protagonists are outliers however, and will require the aid of others to build a self-rapport. This is especially common in the Harem-Protag Subrace.

Pawns of Something Greater...

Anime protagonists rarely reflect the everyman, often being exceptional, whether they like it or not. But this is often not their own fault, as either gods or fate tends to meddle and add dramaticism to even the most slice-of-life fellow of protagonist blood. In order to maximise their ability to fit into societies where they arise, anime protagonists are often of the sex most dominant in the population or power structure, this means you will often seen male heroes in patriarchal societies and female heroes in matriarchal ones. In societies where gender is more fluid, or where sex is not a factor, androgyny that at times favours a more feminine leaning appearance are relatively common, though all sexes are genders are possible in an anime protagonist.

Protagonists with a secret past...

Many protagonists have an ingrained past that defines them, but some occassionally lack any past at all, and must work to develop a new identity or uncover it through their adventures. This new or old information is often revealed during moments of intense emotion, either conflict, or perhaps love. This is once more tied to the dramaticism inherent in the life of a protagonist, but is not a requirement of any particular anime protagonist.

Despite their generally friendly demeanor sometimes a cold shoulder and to be ignored is all a protagonist can enjoy at first due to their stand out nature or appearence; in more backward places, they face ostracism and even violence from those who would seek to avoid the potential harm of a calamatous protagnist's puppetmaster.

After facing a hard life, the protagonist often dreams of settling down to a simple life, away from the hustle and bustle that defined their adventures.

Most anime protagonists gravitate towards the royal court in early life, seeking impression with those of status, though many are swiftly dissallusioned with the realities and complexities of both politics and what must actually be done to save the kingdom, beyond casting a spell, swinging a sword, or relying on extra-planar knowledge.

In contrast, some anime protagonists long for isolation, having spent many years in places booming with all manner of people and life, they seek solace in a world they did not get to appreciate last time round, and will enjoy it, while it lasts..

Anime protagonist BACKGROUNDS

Each Protagonist subrace, and origin has its own temperament, which might make some backgrounds more suitable than others.

Shonen protagonists are considered the most common anime protagonist, though still exceedingly rare. They engage often in forming groups with friends and attempting to mend fences through more strict adherence to either solely combat, or pure diplomacy. 
Likely backgrounds include, monster trainer (combat) and First Year Slime king (Diplomacy).

Slice-of-Life protagonists tend to focus on the simple worldly pleasures missed out on at another opportunity in their past, be it their childhood, young adulthood, or even an entire other life. They tend to minimise drama, and often avoid adventure, but for some, the call of the quest still sings to them. These types tend to be especially proficient in a hobby, such as cooking, playing instruments, or sewing.

Appropriate backgrounds for Slice-of-Life protagonists include cook, charlatan, and soldier.

Harem protagonists tend to indulge, unknowingly in the admiration of many members of the same or opposite gender. They often have many admirers who they naively profess to have affections for. These affections rarely see resolution in a short period of time, but can resolve in a total collapse of the unwitting hero's harem, a polyamourous outcome, or the choice of a single spouse, over other options available as per cultural norms and personal preferences. They are rarely self-aware and often lack the confidence of other protagonists when engaging in discussions touching on romantic or close social relationships.

Likely backgrounds for a Harem protagonist include criminal, folk hero, and reborn noble.

The cold protagonist is the rarest of all the anime protagonist subgroups. Often formed as a resulted of a heartbreaking betrayal after an origin as another of the protagonist types, they feel the cold grip of their emotional injury at all times and struggle to trust or align with others, even when obviously necessary. These protagonists have the ability to revert or change to any of the other subgroups with time and therapy, though they often remain fixated on what resulted in their turn to this protagonist type.

Good backgrounds for cold protagonist include hermit, charlatan and reformed spectre.

Lastly is the Isekai Protagonist variant, typically blessed or cursed from their arrival in the current plane by a force of greater power, be they fiendish, divine and celestial or some other, equally powerful being, though all protagonists are capable of this origin, in some it is a more relevant factor in their lives.

Excellent backgrounds include, Charlatan, Shut-in, and, Good-hearted Savant.

Protagonist Names

Protagonist names are typical to the region where the protagonist first recalls being born. This name also often takes a form expressible via the Kana or the phonology of combined Kanji from the Japanese national language on Planet earth in the mundane plane.

Subraces

Four major subraces of protagonist are found among the worlds of D&D: Shonen/Seinen, Slice-of-life, Cold, Harem, and Isekai. It is recommended to choose one of these subraces.

Not today, jerkwad!

Instead of taking your first saving throw when your hit-points are reduced between 0, you may use an action as though you were conscious, but this action may not be used to make an attack. If your hit-points are raised above 0 by this action you awaken, prone, and gain a bonus action. You may not use this ability if you are reduced below your hit-point maximum in the negative.

Bonds beyond death...

You must choose an ally in your party each encounter and inform your DM who they are. Together you will triumph, and death cannot come between you! If you or your chosen partner are being treated with a medicine check to stabilise the other, you gain advantage due to the bonds of your unconquerable friendship.

Death is overrated.

Once per long rest, when taking damage that will cause your hit-points to drop below their total in the negative you can choose instead of dying, to succeed, on two saving throws against death, and fail on two. You are considered downed, and your condition is unstable. This effect does not alter the outcome of a disintegration spell or spells that result in the complete elimination of the protagonist's existence such as can occur via a wish spell.

Alignment

Independent and self-reliant, Anime Protagonists tend toward a neutral alignment. Cold Protagonists tend towards the lawful alignments

Size

Genasi are as varied as their parents but are generally built around average size for their lineage, abnormally average, in fact.
