Homebrew Akul Orcari Species Details

Khaggsun looked down upon the field and smiled cruelly. His white skin matched the color of his icy heart as cold as the frozen hell's his kind were enslaved on so many years ago, he began to lose his mind to the magics his kind had become so accustomed to, attuning his mind to the very fabrics of magic that held all things together.  A portal appeared in front of him--a copy of it had appeared in front of the village below. . .and he ushered through some brutes to teach the offending village a lesson about resisting the Orcari Way.

Jeardan thumbed his straight horns--a reminder of his heritage along with his white hair and skin-- and thought with a wry smile, now this is the magic treatise I have been looking for. He opened the scroll, and his eye lit with excitement. He then bent his hulking frame to work, etching diagrams onto the walls, mixing powders, and distilling rare plants to extract their essence.

In the distance, Jeardan's dear friend, a half-elf watched lovingly feeling the bittersweet knowledge that Jeardan was doing what he loved--no what he was made for, and was reminded that Jeardan was a shining example that we are all more than the sum of our parts. . .if only he could move beyond that instinct of Orcari purity, maybe she could thaw the frost of his ancestor's past.

Whether acting as magical utility or firepower for an Orcari army or as a passionate outcast, the Akul have a natural inclination toward handling magic.  They often act as sages, advisors, and even emissaries due to their keen intelligence, wisdom and charisma. Far less imposing than the hulking red Dijak and dark and mysterious Nadul, the Akul still are of Orcish heritage and stature which belies their true strength: Their command over magic.

Akul Orcari Traits

Your half-orc character has certain traits deriving from your orc ancestry.

Touched by Magic

The ancestors of the Akul Orcari had to survive in a region both dangerous, and rich in magic.  As generations of the Akul Orcari progressed, the magic of the realm began to be bred into them, giving them magic abilities.  As a part of the Akul schooling these abilities are honed to the point that each can learn a cantrip from the wizard's list, and if they achieve level 3, they can chose a single level 1 spell from the wizard's spell list and cast it once per long rest.  If that Akul is a wizard, they can use the ability to cast the level 1 spell again if the use a level 1 spell slot. The level 1 spell ability is considered to always be prepared, even when the Akul didn't prepare new spells or is prevented from preparing spells.

Thirst for Knowledge

The Akul, above all else, crave knowledge.  They have an insatiable thirst to know everything, which always brings about more questions with each new discovery.  Scholars have noted that the Akul only seem to mate out of the chance that the opposite sex might have a unique perspective to offer.  Children mature quickly because the parents often do not have the time to devote to raising children due to their studies.  Akul are accustomed to leaving larger settlements in the quest for knowledge, and leave home as early at ten years old, seemingly fully grown.  The schools that the Akul set up are meant to teach young Akul how to master their abilities and enrich them with how to attain more knowledge.  Because of this unusual tradition, Akul can become proficient in: Arcana, investigation, history, religion, perception, or insight.

Cold resistance

The Akul developed over generation in a realm where warmth was rare, and a frigid existence was the norm.  The generations that survived became resistant to all forms of cold, natural and magical. Because of this, many Akul will wear clothes only for decoration and convenience, not to protect them from the elements in cold weather.  Because of this, they always feel cool to the touch becoming a quick best friend in hot climates, even though they are uncomfortable in these places.
